We tow a 36'6" fifth wheel with our 2006 2500 crew cab and couldn't be happier. Considering it's a pickup, there is a lot of cabin room for our three kids on long trips.
If I take mileage over a 100 mile highway drive I average between 19.3 and 22 mpg without the camper. It drops to around 17 in town. Pretty good for a 4x4 3/4 ton.

No, I would not recommend this to a friend
My new 2008 Chev. Silverado (2500 duramax diesel), gets the worst fuel mileage I ever had in a pick-up (10-11 mpg). Should have kept my 2002 duramax it got 17-20mpg!!
