    Crunchy poppy sound while turning

This crunchy noise is heard when an attempt is made to turn left or right at a low rate of speed or travel. Most notable when pulling into or pulling out of a parking space. Is it the CV joint or the wheel bearing? Or, a combination of both?

What kind of car is it?  I had an Audi A4 with a similar sound and it ended up being the tie-rods.

I'm thinking it is tie rods or ball joint(s).  My car had a bit more of a rusty creaky spring sound to it though so I could be wrong.

Thank you. That helps me narrow it down to the ball joints. Inner and outer tie rods were replaced within the past 7 months. Although they could still be bad. Hmmmm.

Some questions, do you have automatic or manual locking front hubs..When is the last time you had the front hubs servived. If you had front brakes done, remember it doesn,t mean the shop serviced the bearings. See if the noise changes when locked vs. unlocked..Jack up front wheels, roll wheels listen for noise, also with left hand at 12 o'clock pushing & right hand at 6 o'clock pulling, check slack and bearing adjustment( get someone to look while you pull to see if it is bearing or ball joint slack )..Do some inspections if you are capable, if not find a 4x4 shop that is a BBB member or a NAPA truck center--nationwide warranty with them!! ( NAPAonline.com ) ..My website is www.craneandtemplet.com...Look for discoloration ( rusty look ) on the rubber incasing the ball joints, which could be a sign of overheating..Good luck..

I would suspect the CV joints for two reason, 1) you said especially when pulling into a parking space (which tells me you are turning the wheel hard to the left or right (CV joints dont like that and it is generally a "on and off" cruchy noise that may increase or decrease as the wheel travels up and down. You better make sure on this one or you could find yourself stuck in the parking lot waiting for a tow truck, or worse on the free way and the driveline flew out and smacked everyting in its path.

Jack up the front end, one side at a time and turn the wheel hard to the left and spin the tire, then turn hard to the right and spin the tire. (getting that same noise - or the tire feels like its got a hitch in it --likes to turn hard and then easy) this would isolate which side needs replaced.
If its not that then jump up and down on the bumper -- if you hear the noise perhaps the ball joints need some grease.

I think it is the wheel bearing. You can consult an expert automechanic to be sure.
