shawn, this is not the kind of job you want to tackle if you have never done it before. is the pan damaged? or leaking? first of all you do have to pull the engine to replace the pan because there is not enough room while it is in the vechicle. you also have to remove pretty much the whole front clip minus the fenders, hood, etc. because there is not enough room between the cab and core support.also ford does not use a gasket on the oil pan, they use a very stout silicone, this makes it very tough to break the seal. you have to use a rigid gasket scraper and a hammer and follow it all the way around between the block and pan.    Do Not use a screwdriver or prybar to pry off the pan or you will ruin the pan. you will also find that even though it is an american vechicle 99% of this job uses metric wrenches and sockets.  Also the turbo has to be removed due to the room as well. this is important because the intake portion of the turbo is aluminum and you could damage it. so anyway I hope this helps Good Luck!

Well I got DEAL on a 2001 F350 7.3 Powerstroke diesel F350 Lariat long bed dully.  Good thing because it had a few 'issues'.  One 'issue' is the oil pan. I figure Ford is NOT going to improve this because it is SUCH a money maker and they seem to have the 125,000-150,000 mile target right on.  My 91 F350 with the 460CI V8 needs one @ 145,000 and this truck needs it @ 133,300.

Since in both cases the motor has to be pulled out. It's a GREAT 'money maker' for Ford shops.  I asked why this is still an issue and I got  'well the road salt in the area'  Is said "What is Ford the only truck that rides over road salt ? I have a 85 Mitsu Starion 237,000 and it does not have any issues ( yes I drive it in the winter also) .

So it's on the books at my Ford Dealer as a 15 HR job.  So since the motor is OUT I will have them replace the gaskets around to fix any potential leaks.

Any other issues that can be address while the engine is out?

    Thanks

    George

these people are not really telling you a simple way to try it out first waht you can do is use a nice big jack and just try to creat enough room between the oil pan and the fram but as i think there is a cross member or the axis bars are in the way you need to remove teh hole part of the axis bars that are in the way and what you do is just jack up the engine as far as possible and its really a pain in the ass to do but thing is you realy should not have to totally remove the engine step up from here ok go from jacking the engine up and take the frame axis bars that are in the way hope i could help you man take care
