    Ford Superduty A/C Problem

    Hello to all...

I'm having a problem with my air conditioning on my 2002 Ford F-250 Superduty (Powerstroke 7.3L).  I'm hoping it is not a big problem as the economy...well...you know.  I have never had any work done on the on the air conditioning system for the truck in the almost 8 years that I have owned it.  Last summer, it started having issues.  When the truck is idling on hot days here in Georgia, or when driving but not "in the gas" (i.e. coasting or only slightly giving the accelerator pressure), the air conditioning blows only luke warm to warm air (not really hot...more like the outdoor air temperature).  When I press the accelerator pretty good the air conditioning blows cold air.  At night or in the morning when the outside air temperature is lower the problem is not as noticeable.  Of course, it could be that the problem is the same morning, afternoon, and night but that it isn't as noticeable in the mornings or the nights because the colder air isn't needed as much.

I'm not likely not skilled enough to fix the problem no matter what it is, but I am hoping that I might get an idea or two as to the likely problem so that I know enough not to get abused by the service person when I go to get it fixed.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

My 2004 F250 has the same exact problem, and I can't figure out what it is. Has anyone given you any ideas? Please contact me at tpheulpin@toepferco.com if so. Thanks

Well I hate to add to the problem without a solution but it sounds like I have a problem very similar, but possibly opposite...When at idle in the driveway, I have pretty cold air, but once I start driving, it gradually turns warm, like the outdoor temp. I put a gauge on it, from one of those store bought a/c boost/leak sealer cans, and it shows in the red (high pressure), but before I drive, when engine is off it reads good pressure. Anyone have any ideas?

Most probably this is a weak or failing A/C clutch. I have the same problem with 2000 F250. Open the hood when it quits cooling and see if the clutch is engauged, ie center is turning with the pulley.

    Re: Ford Superduty A/C Problem

    Hello Everyone:

I have a 2000 F250 and it was doing the very same thing. I had a friend tell me what to do. It worked and no more problems. The air gap in the A/C clutch was too great and it was kicking out. He told me to take the small bolt out holding the clutch in and remove a small washer and then put it back. It took abou 5 minutes and no more problems. I was careful with the clutch but, it was really simple. The washer is inside the housing hole where the shaft goes. It is only about a 3/8" washer. I had to take a small screwdriver to get it out. I hope this works for you too.

    Thanks, John
