Nissan has nudged up the pricing on the high trim levels of its iconic Cube, while adding new features for 2010. The base Cube remains at $13,990, but it now carries an extra safety cachet with the recent announcement that the Cube was among 27 vehicles named as Top Safety Picks for 2010 by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. (See our 2009 Nissan Cube pricing announcement.) Step up to the S or SL trim level, there is added, tangible goodness for the extra $340 charged for each. Specifically, it adds hands-free Bluetooth connectivity, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and steering wheel audio controls. Further audio system upgrades include an iPod interface, MP3 playback, Radio Data System (RDS), speed-sensitive volume control (SSV), and two additional speakers (six total). The Krom Edition adds a new 4.3-inch color audio display with USB connectivity and rear camera, along with a push-button start. Since the 2010 Acura ZDX was unveiled , there has been debate over what it is. Based on a platform shared with the MDX SUV , the ZDX looks like a cross between a coupe and sedan, with an elevated ride and premium execution. Regardless of how you perceive this genre-defining vehicle, it definitely has class. 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour launched to take on Venza and Murano What is a CUV (crossover utility vehicle), aka "crossover"? It's a careful blend of SUV and sedan, with close-to-car styling, handling and fuel economy. And it's where a majority of buyers are heading, some moving down from SUVs, others moving up from less practical cars. Honda's new-for-2010 Accord-based Crosstour CUV is essentially an Accord wagon with its roofline aerodynamically sloped instead of squared off--or maybe an Accord five-door hatchback. But Honda prefers you to see it as an increasingly fashionable crossover. It's offered it in two models, a well-equipped EX at just over $30,000, including destination, and an upscale EX-L at about $33K. Four-wheel drive adds $1,450 and voice-activated navigation with a rear-view camera adds another $2,200, both available on the EX-L only. Suzuki is coming out swinging with its all-new Kizashi sedan , striking at the vital midsized sedan segment. Each Kizashi features all-wheel drive and is motivated by a strong 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine producing 180-185 horsepower, depending on transmission fitment. The Kizashi looks poised to compete on personality, feature equipment, and value, with prices starting at $19,000 and peaking at about $27,000, plus $735 in destination charges. Even the base Kizashi S is well equipped with front, side, rear side, and side-curtain airbags; dual-zone climate control; nine-speaker audio system; push-button keyless start; power windows, doors, and mirrors; stability control; and ambient lighting. Pricing: 2010 Dodge Ram Heavy-Duty – Better, Cheaper

Breaking with auto industry tradition, the 2010 Dodge Ram heavy-duty pickup trucks are not just better than the outgoing 2009 models, but they are cheaper. The 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 regular cab ST 4x2 with an 8-foot bed starts at $28,165 (including $950 destination) or $1,970 lower than 2009 model it replaces. The crew cab model is priced at $31,415, and the Mega Cab begins at $36,865. Five trims are offered for 2010: ST, SLT, TRX, Power Wagon, and Laramie. Beneath the sleeker sheetmetal for the new model year, the freshened Ram boasts a number of mechanical enhancements and more feature content, making it a stronger workhorse. Special attention was given to the towing capability, with the diesel versions benefiting from standard exhaust braking. Updated: 2010 Nissan Altima

Nissan has freshened the Altima for 2010, giving the popular, well-regarded coupe and sedan a midlife update. Most noticeable, the Altima has a new hood, grille, front bumper, and wheels. Inside, the Altima has new upholstery, trim, and revised option packages. Stability control is standard on all models.

The infotainment factor is turned up to 11 for the new year, with an available premium Bose audio system. This new stereo boasts nine speakers, 4.3-inch screen, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free phone operation, XM satellite radio, and a rearview camera. Also available is a hard-drive-based navigation system with a 6.5-inch screen, Zagat ratings, XM NavTraffic and NavWeather, Bluetooth streaming audio, DVD player, and 9.3 gigs for music storage.

What hasn’t changed is the base price, which remains at $19,900 for the 2.5 S sedan. The coupe climbs several hundred dollars to $22,440.

The engines carry over, with a 2.5-liter, 175-horsepower four-cylinder and 3.5-liter, 270-horsepower V-6 providing competitive performance for the coupe and sedan. Both engines are refined, powerful, and fuel efficient. 2010 Toyota 4Runner – More Capable, Priced Less

The all-new, fifth-generation Toyota 4Runner is incrementally larger, more powerful, more capable off-road, and $1,000 less than last year’s model.

The 2010 4Runner will be offered in three grades: the top-of-the-line Limited, value based yet well-equipped SR5, and an all-new Trail grade (shown here) aimed at outdoor adventurers who require maximum off-road capability. Pricing ranges from $27,500 for the SR5 grade 4x2 with a four-cylinder engine to $39,800 for the Limited grade 4x4 V6. Despite improvements and added equipment, the MSRP for the most popular 4Runner, the SR5 4x4 V6, remains the same as the previous generation at $30,915.

As with the third-generation, the new 4Runner offers a choice of four- and six-cylinder engine. The 2.7-liter inline four produces 157 horsepower and 178 lbs.-ft. of torque – notably 22 horsepower less than the RAV4. With a four-speed automatic transmission, this base four returns 18 mpg city, 23 mpg highway. For more grunt, the 4.0-liter V-6 products 270 horsepower and 278 lbs.-ft. of torque. Compared against the previous, the new V-6 engine produces 34 horsepower more and 10 horsepower more than the optional V-8. (See our fourth-gen 4Runner review.)

To aid off-pavement excursions, the 4Runner is available with a range of traction-enhancing systems. All 4x4 models feature Active Traction Control (A-TRAC). Downhill Assist Control (DAC) is also standard on SR5 and Limited 4x4 models, and Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC) is standard on all V6 models.

The Trade Grade adapts the Crawl Control (CRAWL) system from the Land Cruiser, enabling the vehicle to creep along at an appropriate speed that keeps the vehicle under control and minimizes the load on drivetrain and suspension components while traversing difficult terrain. Trail Grade also features Multi-Terrain Select system that allows the driver to select a 4x4 suited for the conditions, such as sand or rocks, akin to what has been offered on some Jeep and Land Rover models. For tackling extreme trails, an optional Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) can disconnect the stabilizer bars for increased suspension articulation.

As 4Runners typically spend most of their life on paved roads, Toyota has stepped up the safety gear to include eight standard air bags, including front driver and passenger knee air bags and side-curtain air bags to protect all three seating rows. Also standard is stability control, traction control, antilock brakes, and brake assist. Limited models include Toyota's all-new telematics service, Safety Connect.

The 4Runner V-6 models will arrive in dealerships late October, with the four-cylinder to arrive in January 2010.

GM Joins Ford with Fall Truck Sale Campaign

Maybe it was a marketing ploy, or maybe GM's marketing chief Bob Lutz had a change of heart. After announcing that GM would not be holding the fall season truck sale in order to focus on their new "May the Best Car Win" campaign, Lutz has decided to hold a fall truck sale after all, starting tomorrow, September 25th. So what is GM said to be offering you on Chevrolet and GMC trucks? According to a report today in Automotive News:

$1000 cash on many GMC 2010 trucks, crossovers and SUVs, including Buick Enclave
$500 cash on 2009 and 2010 GMC Canyon pickup trucks
Zero percent financing for 60 months on all Chevrolet Silverado and Colorado trucks, plus the 2010 Chevrolet Malibu sedan
$1500 cash on 2010 Chevrolet Malibu models
$1000 on 2010 Chevrolet Impala sedans, Traverse crossovers, Tahoe and Suburban SUVs, and Silverado and Avalanche trucks

The caveat right now, according to some Chevrolet and GMC dealers, is that they currently do not have a lot of 2010 models in stock. The fall sale ends November 2, 2009. Ford's fall truck sale opened September 10 and ends October 5, 2009, with incentives as much as $4500 on F-150 model line trucks and $5000 on F-Series Super Duty haulers.

Pricing 2010 Hyundai Elantra Blue Boosts MPG

It used to be that manufacturers boasted more horsepower with each new model year, and larger size every redesign. Times have changed, and the common message for 2010 is fuel economy. Hyundai promised a year ago that they would focus their engineering muscle on boosting fuel economy. The Elantra Blue edition leads this effort, with Blue variants and hybrids expected to follow from the company’s other product lines.

The Elantra Blue evolves the 2009 Elantra GLS manual into a greener machine, with fuel economy boosted two mile per gallon for both the city and highway EPA ratings through several tweaks. The Elantra Blue has a smarter alternator management system, lower friction engine components, revised transmission gear ratios, improved lock-up torque converter, and thriftier engine calibration than the previous GLS. It also adds an upshift indicator and the all-important “Blue” badging. The fuel economy is now rated at 26 mpg city, 35 mpg highway.

The Blue is the new entry point into the Elantra line, starting at just $14,145 (plus $720 destination charge). Despite the budget price, it has a healthy features roster that includes power heated mirrors, power door locks, power windows with driver’s one-touch down, remote keyless entry with alarm and trunk release, variable intermittent windshield wipers, multiple storage areas, 60/40 split fold-down rear seatback, tachometer, tinted windows, two 12V outlets, and tilt steering wheel. Standard safety equipment includes six airbags, ABS, four-wheel disc brakes, and active front head restraints. Air conditioning, 172-watt AM/FM/XM/CD/MP3 audio system, iPod/USB auxiliary inputs, and cruise control are available as part of the $1,700 optional Comfort Package.

At $16,895 , the 2010 Elantra GLS builds upon the Elantra Blue with the Comfort Package, adding a four-speed automatic transmission, dual front illuminated vanity mirrors with sunvisor extensions, fog lights, and a windshield shade band. The only option is a $900 power sunroof. Its fuel economy is rated at 26 mpg city, 34 mpg city – a one mpg increase in each environ.

The range is topped with a sportier SE that adds to the GLS: stability control, 16-inch wheels, sport-tuned steering and suspension, leather shift knob, telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel, steering wheel audio controls, and trip computer. The price starts at $17,845, with an available premium package for $1,150 addings a power sunroof and heated front seats.

As with all Hyundai models, the Elantra is protected by a five-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, along with a 10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty.

Updated: 2010 Lexus ES 350

The Lexus ES 350 sedan is treated to a midlife freshening for the 2010 model year, with an updated exterior, interior refinements, and a new telematics system, Enform with Safety Connect. The base price has been increased $330 to $34,800, plus a hefty $875 destination fee.

The 2010 model is distinguished by a revised front grille, grille surround, chrome body side molding, front bumper, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. In addition, the head lights, lower valence with foglamps, and tail lamps were updated, as well. The standard 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels now have a split five-spoke design. The near-lux sedan is available in four new, less-than-intuitively named exterior colors: Truffle Mica, Peridot Mica, Satin Cashmere Metallic and Cerulean Blue Metallic.

Inside, ES 350 receives revised steering wheel controls, new trim choices, and driver's seat memory. A revised center console offers more storage volume than before. In addition, rear coat hooks and an Eco Drive indicator are standard.

The premium audio system has been updated, with Bluetooth streaming audio capability and a USB port, in addition to the auxiliary port. When an iPod is connected through the USB port, information such as artist, track and album is displayed on the head unit, while music can be controlled through the head unit or steering wheel audio controls. An integrated XM satellite radio receiver is also standard. A new optional hard disc drive (HDD) navigation system has a “casual-speech” voice recognition feature, voice command, and enhanced Bluetooth connectivity with phonebook download.

For 2010, Lexus introduces an all-new telematics system called Enform with Safety Connect. Safety Connect is available on both non-navigation and navigation-equipped ES 350, and it offers four safety and security features: automatic collision notification, stolen vehicle Location, emergency assistance button (aka SOS), and enhanced roadside assistance.

Lexus Enform is available only on navigation-equipped vehicles, and it builds on the Safety Connect features with the premium services of destination assist and eDestination. Destination assist "agents" can help drivers find a specific address or point of interest via cell phone, then send the coordinates to the navigation system for routing. eDestination allows drivers to send locations from a home computer to the car, creating customized destination lists.

Complimentary one-year trial subscriptions are included on all new Lexus vehicles equipped with these features.

With these numerous small refinements, and others, the ES 350 has become more desirable, making it an appealing option for a competitively priced, pampering sedan.

Pricing: 2010 Infiniti M35, M45

Days after the 2011 Infiniti M made its virtual debut at the 59th Annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, Nissan’s luxury division has announced the pricing for the last model year of the current M. (Read: “Sneak Peek: 2011 Infiniti M.”) The outgoing 2010 M is currently on sale, starting at $45,800. Again, it is available in a choice of 303-horsepower V-6 and 325-horsepower V-8 engines and in rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations, as well with a selection of available premium, technology and sport packages.

To keep things simple, Infiniti has held the line on prices - no changes from 2009.

Pricing: 2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring Sees Price Drop

One of the basic laws of the car business has been reversed - the annual price increase. Toyota signaled this significant sea change with its declaration that many models were holding the line on sticker prices. Now Hyundai has gone one better by slashing $1,800 from the entry-point to its Elantra Touring wagon.

The significant price reduction comes with a new trim level that starts at $15,995 with a five-speed manual transmission. (Price begins at $17,195 with a four-speed automatic.) To get there, Hyundai has cut some minor features, leaving the powertrain, entertainment system, and safety gear intact.

The Elantra Touring GLS includes air conditioning, power windows, heated mirrors, power door locks, remote keyless entry with alarm, four-way adjustable driver’s seat, and a cooled glovebox. Cruise control is also standard on all GLS models equipped with automatic transmissions. For audiophiles, an integrated 172-watt AM/FM/XM/CD/MP3 audio system with six speakers and iPod/USB/auxiliary inputs is standard.

The optional Popular Equipment Package on the GLS adds roof rails, a telescopic steering wheel, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, trip computer, eight-way driver’s seat with lumbar support, dual illuminated vanity mirrors, sliding sunvisors, seatback pockets, retractable cargo cover, fog lights, illuminated ignition and a premium cloth interior with cloth door panel inserts.

Even with adding the obligatory $720 destination charge, the Elantra Touring GLS is a well-equipped, high-value alternative to a lesser compact car or a small SUV.

Porsche Reveals 2010 911 Turbo Updates

The consummate sports car gets a subtle makeover and a new engine for 2010. Porsche revealed photos and announced updates for the 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo in advance of its official debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Lighter, faster and more fuel efficient, although maybe a little too cute (with its Beetle-esque face), the new 911 Turbo ups the competitive ante by housing the Carrera S’s 3.8-liter direct-injected flat six, with two variable-vane turbochargers and 500 horsepower.

Starting at $132,800 for the coupe and $143,800 for the cabriolet, we’re not sure the mileage increase from 22.1 to 24.1 mpg with the manual transmission will be realized by or even matter to the person who can afford to buy and drive any car that costs significantly more than $100k, but that’s what you get with direct injection technology. Optional is Porsche’s seven-speed Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (Double-Clutch Gearbox, and PDK for short) that nets an even better 24.8 mpg.

Porsche says, “Unlike most other cars in its segment, the new Turbo remains even further below the crucial level of fuel consumption for gas guzzler tax in the USA, the special tax imposed on cars with substantial fuel consumption. All this despite acceleration to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds. Top speed, in turn, is 312 km/h or 194 mph.”

As fall approaches, so do the the 2010 models. Toyota has released pricing on several vehicles, revealing minor increases and in some cases no changes.

Avalon - Toyota's flagship sedan adds rear-passenger auto up/down windows and one new exterior color, Sandy Beach Metallic, for 2010. The base MSRP for the 2010 Avalon ranges from $27,945 for the XL to $35,285 for the Limited, an increase of $100, or 0.3-0.4 percent.

FJ Cruiser - The mighty 2010 FJ Cruiser is treated to several upgrades, including dual VVT-i and roller rocker arms on the 4.0-liter V6. Together, the enhancements add 19 horsepower and more significantly also give the off-road warrior a one mpg increase. Minor suspension changes reduce the turning radius by more than a foot, and a new Army Green exterior color is offered. The base MSRP for FJ Cruiser will range from $23,680 for the 2WD automatic to $25,270 for the 4WD automatic, an increase of $360, or 1.4-1.5 percent.

Highlander - The 2010 Highlander Hybrid carries over unchanged for 2010, but the traditional Highlander adds an available backup monitor on the multi-informational display for the Base grade V6, and a power tilt/slide moonroof for the Base grade four-cylinder. Both versions hold the line on pricing, with the base price starting at $25,705 for the base four-cylinder 2WD and ranging to $41,020 for the Limited 4WD hybrid model.

RAV4 – Pricing remains unchanged for the RAV4, spanning from $21,500 for the base model 2WD four-cylinder to $27,810 for the 4WD Limited V6, though there are minor styling enhancements.

Tacoma – The popular compact pickup truck carries over unchanged except for… wait for it… an enhancement to the front cup-holder functionality. The pricing remains $15,170 for the Regular Cab with a five-speed manual transmission and extends to $27,075 for the V6 4x4 Double Cab Long Bed with a five-speed automatic transmission.

Yaris – The miserly subcompact adds standard stability control and traction control for a modest $150 price increase. Yaris base MSRP goes from $12,355 for the three-door model with manual transmission, to $13,915 for the four-door sedan with an automatic transmission.

These figures do not include the $750 destination charges. These models begin arriving at dealerships in August.

Autobots: 2010 Chevrolet Camaro Transformers Special Edition

Both Transformers movies were instrumental in launching the new Chevrolet Camaro and making it one of the most recognizable cars on the road today. Twenty years from now, Millenials will look back at Bumblebee, the transforming Camaro Autobot, with similar affection to how Gen X remembers the Pontiac Firebird with “Smokey and the Bandit” and the “Knight Rider” television series. As with those kitschy legends, the most dedicated fans will be able to drive their very own Bumblebee. (Read: "Transformers 2: Autobot heroes wear GM Bow Ties.")

Introduced at the Comic-Con geekfest in San Diego today, the Camaro Transformers Special Edition awed fans, young and old. The production car is Rally Yellow, and it will be offered as an LT or SS model, with an optional RS appearance package. Even the base version can put the hurt on would-be Decepticons and underpowered Ford Mustangs with its 306-horsepower V-6 engine. The real action is with the SS delivering 400 or 426 horsepower, depending on transmission.

The exterior is unmistakable with black stripes featuring the Transformers logo on the hood. The franchise logo also appears on the door sills. The classic Autobot shield is placed on the driver and passenger side panels, wheel center caps, and embroidered on the center console armrest. All this goodness can be had for $995, and it is certain to be a collectable.

All Camaros feature an XM satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity, USB input, and OnStar. However, it is unlikely this Bumblebee will be able to communicate with you via song clips… unless you have a sliver of the All Spark.
