GM has cited improving business and the importance of Opel/Vauxhall to its global operations as the reasons for the reversal. GM today posted its October sales figures, showing the first gain in 21 months. The news came hard on Magna International, which had been working with the German government, GM, and partners on acquiring Opel. Known as a major parts supplier, Magna is a large, diverse company that has grown to become a manufacturer-for-hire for several automakers, and this purchase would have been a natural expansion for its business. “GM will soon present its restructuring plan to Germany and other governments and hopes for its favorable consideration,” said Fritz Henderson, president and CEO. “We understand the complexity and length of this issue has been draining for all involved. However, from the outset, our goal has been to secure the best long term solution for our customers, employee, suppliers, and dealers, which is reflected in the decision reached today. This was deemed to be the most stable and least costly approach for securing Opel/Vauxhall’s long-term...(read more)

GM Joins Ford with Fall Truck Sale Campaign

Maybe it was a marketing ploy, or maybe GM's marketing chief Bob Lutz had a change of heart. After announcing that GM would not be holding the fall season truck sale in order to focus on their new "May the Best Car Win" campaign, Lutz has decided to hold a fall truck sale after all, starting tomorrow, September 25th. So what is GM said to be offering you on Chevrolet and GMC trucks? According to a report today in Automotive News:

$1000 cash on many GMC 2010 trucks, crossovers and SUVs, including Buick Enclave

$500 cash on 2009 and 2010 GMC Canyon pickup trucks

Zero percent financing for 60 months on all Chevrolet Silverado and Colorado trucks, plus the 2010 Chevrolet Malibu sedan

$1500 cash on 2010 Chevrolet Malibu models

$1000 on 2010 Chevrolet Impala sedans, Traverse crossovers, Tahoe and Suburban SUVs, and Silverado and Avalanche trucks

The caveat right now, according to some Chevrolet and GMC dealers, is that they currently do not have a lot of 2010 models in stock. The fall sale ends November 2, 2009. Ford's fall truck sale opened September 10 and ends October 5, 2009, with incentives as much as $4500 on F-150 model line trucks and $5000 on F-Series Super Duty haulers.

Research 2009 Chevrolet, GMC, and Ford models in our 2009 New Car Buyer's Guide.

~ Deborah Neal, Editorial Director, autoMedia.com

What’s New for Chrysler in 2010?

Not much in the way of new product. Remember, the company is rapidly reinventing itself, now that it has purged billions in so-called bad assets and almost 800 dealerships, leaving a leaner Chrysler Group to develop a revised product portfolio with its new corporate partner Fiat. (Read: "Like a Phoenix, New Chrysler Group LLC Rises.")

For the imminent future, there simply isn’t much happening. The products are largely in a holding pattern for another model year. However, if you look closely, there are numerous refinements that should make the vehicles more satisfying to own than before, though not the kind of breakthrough changes that are likely to spark showroom traffic. Below are the highlights of the Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep product updates for the 2010 model year.

We have already blogged on the notable update to Dodge Caliber’s interior. Most other vehicles that receive any update for the new model year are given a light touch. The one exception is the 2010 Dodge Ram heavy-duty pickups to be offered for the first time in a true crew-cab configuration, complimenting the regular and mega cab. All heavy-duty trucks are distinguished from their light-duty brethren by a unique grille, hood, and bumpers. Refinements throughout promise reduced noise, and the cabin boasts more storage locations. The Ram sees its various tow and capacity ratings increased, though these reflect more a change in how Dodge chooses to make its claims, more closely matching the competition, than representing engineering changes. The powerplants for the heavy-duty trucks include the venerable 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 and a 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel. Chassis cab 3500, 4500, and 5500 Rams will be available for 2011.

The Ram Power Wagon returns, with electric-locking front and rear differentials, electronic disconnecting sway bar, Bilstein shocks, 32-inch BF Goodrich off-road tires, underbody skid-plate protection, 4.56 axle ratio for hill climbing, and a custom-built Warn 12,000-lb. winch is accessible through the front bumper. The exterior has been enhanced with a new two-tone paint scheme and graphics package.

Fuel economy tweaks are made on several models, including the light-duty Ram, Dodge Nitro, and Jeep Liberty. These models now have a fuel cut off indicated by an “Eco” light activated during deceleration. Other vehicles, including Jeeps, have had this feature previously. The Nitro and Liberty have some detail updates to their various trims, such as materials updates and larger, standard floor mats.

The Jeep Wrangler receives a long list of minor updates that should add appeal to the legendary rock crawler. On all models fog lamps, tow hooks, compass, outside temperature readout, larger visors, fuel-saver indicator, and front dome lamp are standard. The Sunrider soft-top has been made easier to install. Other changes depend on the trim and options, with changes such as uplevel seating surfaces, new colors, new wheels, and the addition of Uconnect Phone added to the navigation system.

The 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee in its final year sees the model line simplified to the Laredo and Limited trims, dropping the Overland. An all-new, larger Grand Cherokee will be introduced for the 2011 model year based on the Mercedes-Benz ML platform.

The Chrysler Sebring convertible and sedan has a minor exterior freshening with a new hood and wheels. Inside, the cars receive a new instrument panel and active head restraints.

And the PT Cruiser lives on for another year, despite its planned discontinuation. There is a new Classic trim that bundles popular features in a value package.

Even the Chrysler 300 receives minor updates, with the 300C now claiming keyless entry/keyless go and rear park assist as standard. Side-curtain air bags are standard on all models. An all-new 300 is expected for the 2011 model year.

The Town & Country and Dodge Caravan minivans now have active head rests and rear obstacle detection on all models.

The Dodge Journey gains the “eco” feature also added to the Nitro, seeing highway fuel economy increase 1 mpg on the highway with the V-6 model. Active head restraints are standard on all trims, as well we four-wheel antilock disc brakes. Those models with a video entertainment system now have a larger, nine-inch screen.

The Dodge Challenger adds even more performance and excitement for 2010 with the Super Track Pack, includes 20-inch Goodyear Eagle F1 Super Car tires, front and rear Nivomat self-leveling shock-absorbers, a larger rear stabilizer bar, a 3.06 rear-axle ratio, performance brake linings, and enthusiast-desired “ESP-off” stability calibration. A less extreme nostalgia trip can be taken with the SE Rallye package featuring a dramatic stripe package alternative to the R/T Classic with dual hood and decklid stripes, chromed fuel filler door, 18-inch rallye wheels with all-season performance tires, body-color deck-lid spoiler, and Micro Carbon interior accents.

And finally, the Dodge Viper lives on despite Chrysler’s previous efforts to sell it off. There are four new paint colors and tan Nappa upholstery to mark the new year.

So, while the engineers learn Italian and put together the pieces for what will be the new Chrysler going forward, these enhancements will have to see consumers and dealers through. Again, while there is little drama, the vehicles are more appealing than before.

autoMedia CARnival 9-4-09: This week in the auto blogs

It's the week ending September 4, and we've browsed our favorite automotive blogs all week long to gather a collection of what we feel is the highlight from each. The CR survey results show good news for the American automakers, as most respondents said the most important consideration in deciding which vehicle to buy is price, followed by fuel economy, safety, and quality.

It's difficult to find the words to describe the highlight of this segment of "Autoline After Hours" being served at TheTruthAboutCars. With nearly 700,000 vehicle transactions utilizing "Cash for Clunkers" trade-ins, not to mention standard purchases that didn't include the government-subsidized rebates, it's clear that manufacturers benefited from a giant sales infusion during the month of August.

When comparing sales figures for August 2009 against August 2008, Ford was the most successful American manufacturer with an increase of 16.99 percent (182,149 units sold) for all of Ford Motor Company and a 21.25-percent jump for just the Ford brand itself. Toyota Motor Company and American Honda were up 6.41 (225,088) and 9.93 (161,439) percent respectively. Unfortunately, even with the incentives, some manufacturers still sold fewer cars than they did a year ago, notably Nissan North America was down 2.93 percent (105,312 units sold), Chrysler was down 15.43 percent (93,222), and General Motors was down 20.19 percent (246,479) from a year ago. (Many thanks to John Neff at AutoBlog for his monthly sales report, from which these figures are derived.)

However, if you compare these figures to the sales reports from last month or even the month before, the impact of the CARS program becomes much more apparent (see chart below). Even though the percentages of sales only look good for a few of the manufacturers when comparing July 2008 to July 2009, watch what happens when you compare August 2009 to July 2009 and June 2009: Everybody wins with sales increases ranging from 17.37 percent for Ford, 36.50 percent for Chrysler, and 39.59 percent for General Motors all the way up to an increase of 60.76 percent for Honda, 70.97 percent for Toyota, and a whopping 80.64 percent for Nissan from over two months ago.

Ironically, while DOT Cash for Clunker reports make it look as if the imports were the biggest winners in the C4C transactions, a report at AutoBlog says that "Ford came out as the clear winner in the Top Ten list," based on additional analysis by Edmunds.com. According to their story, "Ford captured three of the top four positions. The Toyota Corolla, which is at the top of the government's list, falls to number five on Edmunds' list behind the F-150, which didn't even make the government's Top Ten. The Chevy Silverado didn't make the government's Top Ten either, but it's number eight with Edmunds."

As far as getting a clear cut answer from all of this, Mark Twain summed it up well when he said: "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics." A skilled analyst can make a list of numbers demonstrate anything he wants it to show, but one thing is certainly clear: auto sales for all manufacturers have shown a definite trend upwards in the past few months, and as a result of the additional demand, many manufacturers have increased their production schedules and have brought back some employees who had been laid off in recent months.

It will be interesting to see what the next few months show!

By Brandy Schaffels, autoMedia.com Contributing Editor

Both government and industry are struggling to emerge from the paper trail left behind by the sales frenzy that saw $3 billion in federal incentives vaporize in just a few weeks. Preliminary figures released this week show that 84 percent of trade-ins under the program are trucks, and 59 percent of new vehicle purchases are cars.

Consumers were drawn to fuel-efficient models, averaging a 9.2 mpg improvement from the clunker to the new vehicle. Looking at the top 10 most popular purchases, the list is dominated by thrifty, compact sedans such as the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, and Ford Focus. Further, hybrid vehicles accounted for 4.5 percent of new vehicles purchased under the program compared to 3 percent of all new vehicle sales in June 2009. Interestingly, more than ¾ of those buying a hybrid were replacing an SUV or truck.

But the key question is, what automakers most benefited from the sales? While the Department of Transportation points out that 54 percent of the top 10 vehicles sold were manufactured in the United States, the sales breakdown shows that that import companies Toyota and Honda captured a significant portion of clunkers business, with General Motors leading the domestic brands.

Cash for clunkers new-vehicle sales share

19.2% Toyota Big news involves the end of the CARS rebates on Monday, as once again the Feds predict the money will run out over the weekend. People: That's nearly $3 billion dollars in rebates and admin costs car shoppers have burned through in barely a month!

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has announced the cash for clunkers program will come to a close on Monday, August 24th at 8 p.m. EDT. According to The Detroit News, the latest round of Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS) rebates has inspired 457,476 sales worth $1.91 billion in rebates. Apparently, dealers have been submitting paperwork for 20,000 vehicles, or about $100 million, a day in recent days, since the program was renewed. And this time, lawmakers have no interest in extending the program. Unfortunately, while sales have been brisk, reimbursements have not, so Chrysler Group and General Motors have announced they will advance funds to dealers who are still awaiting payment from the government for clunkers deals. DetNews reports the administration has paid just $145 million of the $1.9 billion in vouchers submitted -- or less than 10 percent of the funds requested. YIKES!

For more than a year now, says The Detroit Bureau, automotive manufacturers have, done nothing but cut, cut, cut. Thanks to the cash for clunkers sales melee, and inventories so low that some popular models are literally being sold right off the car haulers, automakers are cautiously starting to ramp up production again. Hope they get to lots before the money runs out!

Dealership inventory is quickly thinning many towns, even as factories ramp up overtime to deliver small, fuel-efficient vehicles in before the funds run out. This bill doubles the original $1 billion in funding that sparked a new car sales wave. Late Friday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that 245,384 CARS credits had been requested, totaling $1.03 billion. The extension came just in time to continue the offer through the weekend. (See: “Cash for Clunkers: Senate Approves $2 Billion Extension.”)

Obama said, “Now, more American consumers will have the chance to purchase newer, more fuel-efficient cars and the American economy will continue to get a much-needed boost. ‘Cash for clunkers’ has been a proven success: the initial transactions are generating a more than 50 percent increase in fuel economy; they are generating $700 to $1000 in annual savings for consumers in reduced gas costs alone; and they are getting the oldest, dirtiest and most air-polluting trucks and SUVs off the road for good. Businesses across the country – from small auto dealerships and suppliers to large auto manufacturers – are putting people back to work as a result of this program.”

From the initial sales rush, dealer lots have seen the inventory of their most fuel-efficent cars sold down. For those late-comers to the program, there will be fewer choices of year-end models. (Read: "Cash for Clunkers – Top 10 Trade Ins, Purchases.") It is important for shoppers to not only research their selections, but work to get their first-choice model, rather than compromise. After all, it somewhat defeats the purpose if you don’t buy the four-cylinder you wanted and go with the V-6, instead. Remember, dealers can search regional inventory and have a car transported to their shop. Consider using either a car-locator feature on the manufacturer site or cast a wide net in seeking dealer quotes online to ensure you find the car you want.

Still can’t find what you want? In some cases, the 2010 models are coming later this month, such as several Toyota models.

The bill was passed with 60 yeas and 37 nays. It now goes to President Obama for signing into law.

Obama has been a strong proponent of the cash for clunkers extension, and it is expected that he will swiftly put pen to paper. Government officials had forecasted that the initial CARS funds would have run dry this Friday. It is estimated that upwards of 500,000 clunkers could be traded in and replaced with more fuel-efficient, and likely safer, vehicles as a result of this continuation.

The original program has exceeded expectations, fueling a massive sales rush over the past few days. Buyers have been exchanging older, worn-out SUVs and pickup trucks for fuel-efficient small and midsized cars. Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors have claimed 45 percent of the CARS sales during this period. (See “Cash for Clunkers – Top 10 Trade Ins, Purchases.”)

"Our customers and dealers appreciate Congress' help in keeping the program's momentum going and providing the stimulus to put more clean, fuel-efficient vehicles on the road. CARS is one program that has given consumers, the economy and a vital industry a much needed boost," said GM Sales Vice President Mark LaNeve.

Car shoppers may find dealerships have a dwindling supply of the choicest models, as the auto industry transitions to the 2010 model year. Many new models will be shipped to dealers this month for those who can wait, or are willing to reserve a vehicle in advance. It is important for consumers to research their purchase. History shows these buyers tend to hold on to a vehicle for a long time – best to make sure it is one that will serve their needs for many years to come.

Research new vehicles in the 2009

In “Cars for Clunkers Works, Time for a Sequel?” we chronicled the July sales that were buoyed from the program. We now have more detailed information on what vehicles were purchased, with refined figures by brand.

Thus far, 83% of trade-ins under the program are trucks, and 59% of new vehicle purchases are cars. Nearly half of new vehicles purchased under the program were from the Big 3. Detroit’s share in this program (45%) is equivalent to their overall share in the auto market (about 45%) – a couple points less than indicated in published reports yesterday.

Looking at the product mix, the trade ins are all traditional, high-volume models from domestic brands. The popular purchases are from several brands, skewing toward the imports. On average, the new models boast 63% better fuel economy than the models turned in.

A whopping 184,304 vehicles have been exchanged through this program, with car buyers benefiting from $775.2 million in credits. The program is still in effect, with some money remaining. The Senate is expected to pass a $2 billion extension to the program, and automakers and their suppliers are ramping up in anticipating.

So what are people buying? (Read: “Cars for Clunkers Works, Time for a Sequel?”) As a result, sales on fuel-efficient small and midsized vehicles have soared the last few days. Hybrids and fuel sippers are flying off the lots, leaving trucks and SUVs behind. As enthusiasts, we’re left wondering about a certain segment that received too little attention lately, the muscle cars.

Car nuts have been bench racing the latest Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Challenger, and Ford Mustang, as the experts have weighed in with their professional reviews. Horsepower has been boasted, quarter-mile slips compared, and value debated. In the end, the popularity contest that matters most to manufacturers is the sales race.

So, for the month of July, the figures break down to:

7,113 - Chevrolet Camaro
886 - Dodge Challenger
6,686 - Ford Mustang

More significant is seeing how these reborn legends fair over time, but the midyear introduction of the Camaro and 2010 Mustang mean it is too soon to draw conclusions there. Since we know you’re curious, year to date:

22,510 - Chevrolet Camaro
15,968 - Dodge Challenger
40,474 - Ford Mustang

As Top 40 music has taught us, popularity doesn’t equate to the best. That part of the bench racing debates will never be settled, though numbers can point to how the people are voting with their checkbooks. The Camaro looks strong out of the gate, though its lead is quite limited compared against the Mustang, suggesting that the original pony car may take the lead once the Camaro plateaus. It may come down to a battle of special editions, like the Camaro Transformers edition, in which case the battle could be quite exciting for enthusiasts. We hope the checkered flag in this race isn’t waved for many years, but it is interesting to see how these competitors measure up on this lap.

Cars for Clunkers Works, Time for a Sequel?

The CAR Allowance Rebate System (CARS), popularly known as “cash for clunkers” was executed in a bumbling fashion that only government could manage, yet it was a resounding success. Manufacturers have released their July sales figures, and the news is largely good (or at least, not as bad), with most full-line automakers seeing a lift in the past week from the CARS program. (Learn how cash for clunkers works.)

Subaru boasted the most impressive gain, comparing July 2009 to July 2008, with a stunning 34-percent increase. Although not known for high fuel economy, much of its model line is eligible for consideration, and the AWD-automaker is drawing showroom traffic with its redesigned Legacy and Outback. Volvo saw a 26-percent gain, with the XC60 crossover gaining new buyers to what is otherwise an aging product line. Hyundai issued CARS credits weeks before the program was finalized, and as a result, the crafty company saw a 12-percent gain. (See “Hyundai Honors Cash for Clunkers CARS Rebate – Now.”)

But the real winner is arguably Ford Motor Company. Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln retail sales increased nine percent versus a year ago; total sales (including fleet) were 158,838, up two percent versus a year ago. Ford itself boasted its first sales increase in 19 months. The big winners in the Ford line were Focus (21, 830 sales) Escape, (20,241 sales), Fusion (17,610 sales), and Ranger (7,695 – up 65 percent). Combined, its hybrid models sold 5,353 units.

General Motors figures were down 19.4 percent over July 2008 – a dramatic improvement over past months. Chrysler fared even better, just 9.4 percent off. The Jeep Patriot was up 134 percent, the Dodge Caliber up 63 percent, and the Chrysler PT Cruiser up 24 percent – making the move to continue production seem rather sage. Both companies pulled this off despite significant dealer reductions in the past 12 months. Combined, the Detroit 3 accounts for an estimated 47 percent of the cash for clunkers sales, according to the Detroit News. In addition, the program proved to prime the retail pump and brought many more additional sales.

This overall success was just the boost the auto industry needed, infusing capital and helping to clear away year-end 2009 models. It didn’t come easy. One billion tax dollars went to the cause, and the rush to implement CARS meant many speed bumps along the way.

Last Friday, the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) estimated that the funds were at risk of expiring, just days after the program began. Yet the federal government encouraged sales to continue over the weekend, ensuring the funds would be made available and chaos would ensue, as some dealers hesitated to risk reimbursement to make sales. Program overseer the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is struggling to catch up with the filed paperwork that would identify the number of credit claims filed and therefore determine the money spent.

For now, the official word from Cars.gov is that the program is in effect. Meanwhile, the House of Representatives passed a bill to contribute another $2 billion to extend cash for clunkers. It rests with Senate now. This week, the Senate will accept the House bill, revise it, or reject it altogether. There seems to be significant momentum behind supporting CARS. After all, the first deployment exceeded expectations.

Research new vehicles in the 2009 new car buyer’s guide. The Fusion will continue to represent Ford in the premier Sprint Cup Series and the F-150 will compete in the Camping World Truck Series.

Since its 1964 mid-year introduction, the Mustang has been a dominant force in motorsports, from drag racing and Trans Am, on to Grand-Am Cup and Formula D drifting.

Ford Racing has gone through the official NASCAR submission and approval process for the new car, and, once templates are finalized, production of Mustang parts will start so teams can build the first cars for testing later this fall. It is expected that the NASCAR Mustang will make its race debut in the spring at Talladega. NASCAR officials say that this Mustang will look and drive differently than the Cup Series’ “Car of Tomorrow” cars, thereby better distinguishing the two series.

“We had been talking with NASCAR for some time about Mustang as part of its vision for a ‘muscle car’ rollout for the Nationwide Series. We both saw it as a way of differentiating the series from Sprint Cup,” said Wolfe. “We loved the idea, so we jumped on the chance to extend Mustang's racing legacy to a new series reaching a huge and loyal audience.

Rumors persist that Dodge will follow the muscle-car motorsports trend by putting the Challenger in the Nationwide Series. It would be a trifecta if Chevrolet joined with the Camaro, though this is a tough time to add cost and complexity to a motorsports program. Still, it would be great to see these reborn 1960s legends battle on the big tracks.

Get a jump on the competition and read our 2010 Ford Mustang review.

Expand your NASCAR knowledge with:

NASCAR - Common Terms and Phrases Defined
NASCAR Basics - Understanding NASCAR

Bankruptcy Court Approves Sale of GM Assets to New GM

The General is racing through its bankruptcy proceedings, with victory lane in sight, where the troubled automaker will arrive leaner, meaner, and better positioned for long-term success. A key milestone was reached Sunday when Judge Robert E. Gerber of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York approved the sale of substantially all of General Motors Corporation's assets to the new GM.

Through the 363 asset sale, the new company will carry on with the “best” parts of the old corporation, officially known as Motors Liquidation Company. Among the key assets are just four brands: Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC. Separately, GM has said it will withdraw from the NUMMI cooperative factory venture with Toyota, where the Pontiac Vibe was built in California.

The new GM's common stock will be owned by:

U.S. Department of the Treasury: 60.8 percent

UAW Retiree Medical Benefits Trust: 17.5 percent

Canada and Ontario governments: 11.7 percent

The old GM: 10 percent

The judge's order included a four-day stay before closing of the sale can occur, allowing for appeals to be heard.

autoMedia CARnival July 3, 2009: What is happening this week in the auto blogs?

It's the week ending July 3, and we've browsed our favorite automotive blogs all week long to gather a collection of what we feel is the highlight from each. Gas prices and gas deals are a big incentive for car sales this week, as well as news on the status of the automotive industry.

It's a popular car with unpopular reviews! First Jeremy Clarkson blasted it, then Consumer Reports slammed its "ride quality, handling, interior noise, acceleration, rear-seat, access, and visibility," and now AutoBlog has given the 2010 Honda Insight another disappointing review, citing a bouncy ride and small interior space as its major flaws. Heck, it's a relatively pain-free way for Suzuki to advertise "Free Gas!" and it's still a few hundred bucks back in your pocket.

Free gas and cheap gas must be the hot keywords this week!
