  • Volvo sells 15,000,000th car

This past February, Volvo produced car number 15,000,000, and the new owners just took delivery of the history-making 2008 Volvo C70 . The car traveled more than 5,000 miles from its factory birthplace in Uddevalla, Sweden to San Diego, California, where new owners Paul and Aimee Kay received a surprise, a free European deliver trip. Since they already have their Celestial Blue, they will be able to simply enjoy the trip, complete with visit to the factory delivery center in Goteborg, Sweden. Coincidentally, the first Volvo car to leave a Swedish factory in April, 1927, was a convertible. Nicknamed “Jakob,” the OV4 was powered by a four-cylinder engine. Any Volvo customer can participate in the Overseas Delivery Program . The company will arrange to have your new Volvo delivered to any one of 13 European destinations, then you can drive it during your stay, and have it delivered to your home in the United States Research Volvo in the buyer’s guide , complete with pricing, specifications, and photo galleries. • Ford takes aim at blind spots

Ford will launch a two-pronged effort to reduce the potential risks posed by vehicle blind spots, using an inset side mirror and a radar-based monitoring system. This move follows the company’s Volvo division introducing its BLIS system, which similarly illuminates a light by the driver or passenger A-pillar to indicate to the driver that a vehicle may be in blind spot and on what side. The blind-spot mirror is a secondary convex spotter in the top outer corner of the side mirror, aimed exclusively at the driver's blind spot. A frugal, low-tech safety aid, this appears to be similar to a stick-on mirror available at any parts store. In consumer research, Ford found that nearly 76 percent of the participants said the mirror improves their confidence while driving. This simple, yet effective, feature will be standard on many upcoming Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln models. Decidedly more sophisticated, the radar-based Cross Traffic Alert feature can assist drivers in backing up by warning of impending traffic. The radar can sense moving objects within a 65-foot range from either the left or right side of the vehicle. It also works when backing out of angled parking spaces. Using the same...

  • Sneak peek: 2009 Volvo XC60

Prior to its official unveiling at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show next month, Volvo has released the first official pictures of the all-new 2009 Volvo XC60. Positioned as a smaller alternative to the XC9 0, XC90, aimed at more youthful active types, Volvo claims the XC60 will be the brand’s safest vehicle. This is quite a boast from a company that has written the book on automotive safety. (Read about Volvo's safety "firsts." ) A unique City Safety system on the XC60 is engineered to help the driver avoid or reduce the effects from common low-speed impacts that occur in urban traffic. If the car is about to drive into the vehicle in front and the driver does not react, the car automatically applies the brakes. Smart systems have been fitted to other Volvo models, like the Collision Warning system on the S80 sedan that alerts the driver to potential, imminent collisions. Volvo has confirmed the U.S. version will be launched with a 281-horsepower, turbocharged six-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive when it goes on sale the first quarter of 2009. Given the poor fuel economy of that engine in other applications, it is safe to assume there may be a lower-level powertrain available...
