  • Chrysler and Nissan extend partnership

Fresh from its split from Daimler, and subsequent purchase by investment group Cerberus, Chrysler formed a partnership with an international automaker Nissan. Back in January, Nissan agreed to supply Chrysler with a new car based on the Nissan Versa sedan for limited distribution in South America. This week, the companies have announced that the partnership has deepened, with each automaker committing to produce vehicles for the other. Nissan will manufacture an all-new small car based on a unique Chrysler concept and design for North America, Europe, and other global markets in 2010. Chrysler will manufacture a full-size pickup for Nissan. Based on a Nissan design, this truck will be manufactured at Chrysler’s Saltillo, Mexico, factory. In order to accommodate this product, Chrysler will shift volume from Mexico to its U.S.-based assembly plants that produce pickup trucks. Sales of the pickup in North America will start in 2011. This alliance promises to bring efficiencies to both companies, helping them to better capitalize on core competencies to aid the other. Further, it marks a strong showing for Cerberus’s business acumen. Research Chrysler and Nissan in the buyer’s guide, complete...
  • Sneak peek: 2010 Pontiac G8 sport truck

Automakers use car shows for several key purposes: Create excitement for the brand with both future production models and sheetmetal-rendered hyperbole. Stimulate shareholder interest, as a good promise can often temper a painful reality. Introduce a future design language, preparing the world for a new look or product that could bring a dramatic change to the portfolio. Appease the dealers who demand a steady flow of new, interesting products and enthused consumers drawn to the brand virtues. Feel out public, media, and investor interest in a new model, technology, or design direction. This last reason always seems the most exciting, when true, as it provides a unique opportunity for consumers to give feedback to an automaker and influence a future product, as Honda is doing with the CR-Z concept . The latest example is with the 2010 Pontiac G8 sport truck to be shown this week at the New York International Auto Show . At this point, Pontiac has made the decision to build the car. That much is locked in stone. What the GM division seeks now is to excite the public and get some quality name suggestions. (Learn more about the car name game from CNN.) That’s where you come in. Consumers...
  • 2009 Suzuki Equator pickup truck

Two core business hemispheres of Suzuki --recreational vehicles and automobiles--finally meet with the Equator pickup truck. Adapted with nominal changes from the Nissan Frontier , the Equator expands the Suzuki offerings and dove-tails nicely with its ATV, marine engine, and motorcycle offerings. Unveiled at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show , the Equator made its first appearance as a trio of mildly modified, SEMA -ized trucks. Under the graphics and paint jobs, we see the respected Frontier, ready for action. The Equator will be offered in extended and crew cab configurations, with both rear- and four-wheel drive. The base engine is a 2.5-liter, 152-horsepower I-4, and the top offering is a much more potent 4.0-liter, 261-horsepower V-6. Both engines can be matched to a five-speed automatic transmission, although only the four-cylinder is available with a manual shifter. The bed employs the Nissan rail system, making it easy to add bed accessories, or cinch down a load. Crew cab models can be had with a roof rack. The Equator features a unique front-end appearance, though the rest of the truck, from features to hardware, carries over from the Frontier. For truck buyers, the Equator offers...
  • Ford Works Solutions takes trucks high-tech

Among the most significant unveilings at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show was the Ford Works Solutions mobile computing solution for full-sized trucks and vans. Available this fall on F-150, F Series Super Duty, and E Series, Ford Works Solutions replaces the stereo with a full computer with scalable features engineered to aid small businesses, contractors, and field managers. Powered by Microsoft Auto, the in-dash computer provides high-speed Internet access via the Sprint mobile broadband network and navigation by Garmin. (Owners will be responsible for the monthly access fee.) The computer is equipped with a 6.5-inch touch screen, two gigabytes of memory, a slot for memory card, and a USB port. The computer works with Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones, offering hands-free calling with push-to-talk voice recognition, access to user address books, and the ability to receive text messages. A stylus is included for use on the touch screen. The system also comes with a wireless keyboard. The rest of the Works Solutions system builds on this foundation, enabling the driver to use Web-based applications and connect to the office computer from anywhere. The possibilities are quite enticing for field...
  • Hummer introduces the H3T pickup truck

At the 2008 Chicago Auto Show , Hummer will introduce its much-anticipated H3T pickup truck. Shown in concept form as a standard-cab model, this 2009 production vehicle is based on the H3 platform stretched 22 inches, for a 134-inch wheelbase. Like the H3 SUV, this crewcab model will be powered by a choice of five-cylinder and V8 engines. The H3T has a five-foot bed with a removable tailgate and provisions for a bed-rail accessory system. Hummer has a slew of bed accessories for launch, including removable and lockable bed-mounted storage boxes; an adjustable bike chock that can be used to help secure mountain bikes or motorcycles; and a bed extender. There is no convenient “Midgate” to allow the cargo space to expand to the interior, like with the Chevrolet Avalanche. Hummer claims the bed is wide enough to accommodate a 4x8 sheet. A full-size spare tire is mounted beneath the bed. The H3T is otherwise similar to the H3, sharing interior design and features. There are fewer H3T flavors for now, with major choices being between powertrain and suspension related. For the chassis, buyers can stick with the standard “Z85 Heavy-Duty Handling and Trailering” package, or for serious off-roading...
