For those wired individuals who never want leave the electronic tether to their on-demand entertainment, vibrant social networks, and almighty digi-god Google, Chrysler will offer uconnect web—a dealer-installed in-vehicle wireless Internet connectivity system.
Uconnect web can be fitted to any Chrysler, Dodge, or Jeep vehicle, transforming it into a mobile WiFi “hot spot.” Run over integrated 3G and 2.5G (EVDO, 1xRTT) cellular data networks, the router module with antenna hard-mounts in any vehicle providing high-speed Internet access. The “hot spot” connection radius is approximately 100 feet—making it convenient to access the Internet at a soccer field or family picnic.
So, what can you do with the WiFi, considering the Chrysler cars don’t come from the factory with in-dash PCs? Well, it could allow passengers to access the Internet for e-mail, chat and IM; view streaming movies or television shows; and download music and download/upload images via any WiFi device, such as a a laptop, iPhone, Sony Playstation (PSP), or PDA.
Available in August as a dealer-installed Mopar accessory, uconnect web will cost $449 for the route. Dealer installation is estimated at approximately $35-50. Autonet Mobile offers wireless Internet account service at $29 a month, available in 12-, 24- and 36-month service plans. Plus, there is a one-time $35 service activation fee.
The price for being wired isn’t cheap, but this opens a whole world of mobile infotainment possibilities that could transform arduous commutes and family road trips into productive, entertaining journeys.
