MPG Kings: The Most Fuel-Efficient 2011 Cars

by Jeff Prescott on 11.08.2010 22:01

It used to be that bench racing was all about horsepower. Today, fuel economy ratings are the figures that matter most to car shoppers. Manufacturers are responding, prodded along by increasingly aggressive federal fuel economy requirements. As a result, we’re seeing more models crest the 40-mpg barrier. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released its 2011 fuel economy figures, revealing those cars with the best fuel economy. No surprise, most are hybrids.

Just missing the list are some naturally aspirated cars that deliver excellent fuel economy, as we have experienced in the real world. Notably, the Ford Fiesta is rated at 29 mpg city, 40 mpg highway and the Mini Cooper with 29 mpg city, 37 mpg highway. And for a family sedan, the Hyundai Sonata is officially rated at 24 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and for wagons, the Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen TDI with 30 mpg city, 42 mpg highway. We have experienced 40 mpg and above in all those choices.

The official list of cars with the best fuel economy for 2011:

  • Toyota Prius (hybrid) - 51/48
  • Ford Fusion Hybrid FWD, Lincoln MKZ Hybrid FWD - 41/36
  • Honda Civic Hybrid, Honda Insight (hybrid) - 40/43
  • Honda CR-Z (automatic, hybrid) - 35/39
  • Lexus HS 250h (hybrid) - 35/34
  • Ford Escape Hybrid FWD, Mazda Tribute Hybrid FWD - 34/31
  • Smart ForTwo (Cabriolet, Coupe) - 33/41
  • Nissan Altima Hybrid - 33/33
  • Lexus RX 450h 2WD (hybrid) - 32/28
  • Honda CR-Z (manual, hybrid) - 31/37

all of these "most fuel-efficient cars" have electric i.e. Hybrids - articles about them do not say that a new battery will cost $3K to $7K...... making them a good item for car theft.
the most mpg [miles per gallon] of these hybrids go to 40+.

Don't you wonder why we only get Hybrids in USA? And why Obama wants 1M by 2015? And why Obama wants more Nuclear Plants built - for Special Interests investments? Nuclear Plants - can't get rid of Nuclear Waste safely.

then there is the SEAT Ibiza [not allowed into usa].
SEAT Ibiza gets 80 mpg [miles per gallon]. NO ELECTRIC.
SEAT Ibiza - 5 passenger, Diesel [lowest emissions for "clean air"] Diesel in UK cost less than gas [[used to be that in USA till Big Oil made changes].
SEAT sold all over the world - now being sold in CHINA and RUSSIA [built there also starting 2012].
SEAT Ibiza built and sold in Mexico since 2001
SEAT Ibiza and other models at Shanghai International Auto Show April 2011.
SEAT cars - none shown in NY International Auto Show or Washington DC or Philadelphia Intern'l Auto Show.
    Don't you wonder why???

PROBLEM: can't be bought in USA - can't even bring one through customs.
    Don't you wonder why???

It has been reported that the clean burning, diesel O.P.O.C. engine will produce 300 horse power and get 100 miles per gallon in a five passenger car. It could easly be modified to burn gasoline or natural gas that we have an abundent supply of here in the U.S.A. I think that both government and big business is afraid of this because they would lose so much control of the citizen.  Think of what would happen overnight . You could produce your own electricity cheaper than what you get off the grid, equils government lose of control. You would buy fewer gallons of gas so the government would collect less money plus big business would make less profit and pay less tax so again both lose. I think fuel efficiency will increase in drips and drabs so control can be maintained over the people. The only solution that I can envision is if WE, THE PEOPLE TAKE CONTROL OF THE GOVERNMENT, or somebody with charector produces something for energy production that neither gov. or big business can control.

My Buick Lesabres get 32 MPG on the highway
    They are full size cars
    seat six full sized people
    look nice
    and stopped production in 2005.

Over and over again people get in my Buic and say "Wow this is an American car? It rides so nice.
they have 200+ HP, great get up and go
never break down (I have an '05 with 137,000 I have changed oil, serpentine belt, tires brakes and bought a new battery last year just because the original was 5 ears old and I didn't want to take a chance over the winter.

    The cars are great...

My '97 gets 29 on the highway and 24 in the city, has a little more room than the '05 but not as many creature comforts.

Piffff to "Smart Cars what's so smart about a car I can park inside my Buick that only gets 10 extra MPG when I cannot bring more than one person?

The highest on the list the Toyota Prius (hybrid) - gets 51/48 agreeably decent but the car is too  small to get into... my family is tall... how tall? my 12 yr old daughter is 5'10 and my tallest son is 7'2"  Think we atre getting the five of us into a Prius?

My '79 MGB (yes the son fits but cannot drive it the pedals are too close together) gets 35 MPG has style and is quite relaible too...  and insurance is about $100 a year for full coverage!
