Washing, and a good coat of wax will help prevent brake dust from sticking to the spokes. Chromed finish wheels should only be cared for with chrome care products and methods. Chrome wheels should never be waxed, as the finish needs to breathe. Great care should be taken with polished wheels, as oxidation and pitting can be a perpetual problem. Brushes that will fit into the shape of the wheels go far to help scrub out dust and grime. Finally, while one-step cleaners are a good quick fix, be certain that the formula is compatible with the finish by testing on a small area before coating the entire wheel. Some of these cleaners can cause damage. If in doubt, consult the owner's manual or wheel manufacturer's recommendations for the best approach.

Park the vehicle in the shade. Allow wheels to cool. Hose off dust and debris.

Use soap, water and elbow grease to start removing built up dust, grime, and debris.

Getting out deep-down dirt is easier with brushes. Make sure the bristles won't damage finishes before getting in too deep. This one scrubs the tire as an added benefit.

Long-handled brushes can help prevent aching backs, and get in-between spots.

Bottle-type brushes can help remove dirt from spokes and brake calipers.

Chrome and polished wheels look similar, but require different care. Don't apply wax to chrome finish wheels, as the chrome needs to breathe.

One-step cleaners can be very effective, but be sure to test on a small area before coating the entire wheel.

Removing the wheel and cleaning the backside can add a higher level of detail to the vehicle. Scrubbing may be required to remove heavy deposits.

A clean wheel backside can make the front side appear brighter by reflecting light through the spokes.
