CarCare

The advantages of a car cover are obvious, especially to those who can't garage their vehicle, or the parking lot at work is without shade or any defense against bombardier bird droppings. A car cover will protect a vehicle's finish from the elements, shield the interior from UV radiation and even deter theft of personal property.

Proper care of a car cover is not always obvious, however. Besides keeping a car cover clean, the most important consideration is following a consistent removal/installation routine that prevents scratches on the paint finish. This practice is especially important if your cover is on and off the vehicle on a daily basis.

The Photo Gallery shows a preferred method of folding and removing a car cover. We've also included some general tips on selecting and using car covers.

Tips

TIP 1: Always purchases a car cover that is custom fitted to your year and make of vehicle. Universal covers that don't fit tight can flap in the wind and damage the paint finish.

Photo Guide

Be sure the cover top is clean before removing it. Brush off all loose dirt and leaves that might get caught on the underside during removal that might later scratch the paint.

Begin removing the cover by unhooking the corners, then free the ears from the mirrors.

Fold the sides on top of the vehicle.

On wider vehicles, the cover may have to be folded over twice to achieve a manageable width.

The cover can be rolled up or folded in small sections, always walking along the car as the cover is gathered to minimize moving or pulling the cover across the paint finish.

Continue rolling or folding the cover to the end. Do not slide across the hood.

Before installing a cover, wipe away loose dirt and leaves from the paint finish with your favorite duster.

Reverse the steps to install. Unfold the cover from where you finished the last time, taking care not to pull the cover across the paint finish. Unfold the sides and secure the corners.
