1. They're Not Just Convertibles Anymore

Many of those two doors that you're seeing on the street are convertibles in camouflage—retractable hardtops. The latest trend in open cars is to dispense with cloth tops in favor of folding metal lids. It's true that with the top up, a folding hardtop is quieter and safer than a ragtop. But, the retractable revolution has more to do with fashion than function. Almost all modern convertibles have lined roofs and glass backlights. Some are front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. So, many are suitable for year 'round use, wherever you live.

To get that smooth, top-down look that we all like, manufacturers decided that all they had to do was stash the top beneath the rear deck when it's not needed. The problem is, the top is now where the trunk used to be. As a result, your convertible's trunk—soft top or retractable—may be closer to a shoebox than it is a steamer trunk. Lots of luggage? Lots of luck.

Packing light just went from nicety to necessity. With soft luggage and a hard line on excess wardrobe, though, a couple can still find enough room for a weekend getaway. You can even find models that will swallow a full size golf bag or two, but it's harder than it used to be.
