> Reduce distractions. Don't use a cell phone while driving, pull over to answer or call on a cell phone. If you are traveling to a new destination, try to have a travel partner who can help look for signs and read maps.
> Take a refresher driving course: AARP55 Alive/Mature Driving, call 800-424-3410; Coaching the Mature Driver, US National Safety Council, call 800-621-7619, Safe Driving for Mature Operators is a course offered in some states by local AAA clubs.
> Listen to your family, your doctor, and your friends. If someone says you have a driving problem, it is time to stop and listen.
> If you or a loved one should stop driving check with senior centers and community service agencies to see what special transportation alternatives are available. Check out public transportation in your area for senior discounts on buses or trains.
> If you know your parent cannot drive safely and will not give it up, you have several options: stage an intervention with family members, health care workers and anyone else respected by the senior. Contact the local Department of Motor Vehicles and report your concerns. Depending upon state regulations and the individual's disabilities, it may be illegal for them to continue to drive. The DMV may do nothing more than send a letter, but that could convince the senior driver to put away the car keys. If all else fails, remove their car. These measures may seem extreme, but the lives of others may depend upon your actions.
