Air bags are certainly wonderful safety innovations in today's cars and trucks. Their only drawback is that most airbag steering wheels are basically ugly—style is sacrificed for function.

Styling Ring
Recognizing the need for restyling these wheels without inhibiting the function of the airbag, Grant Products, which has manufactured aftermarket steering wheels for decades, recently introduced its Styling Ring. This simple yet effective solution to the airbag aesthetic problem installs in seconds without tools. Styling Rings are available in simulated woodgrains, various colors and simulated carbon fiber for a competition appearance. Available for most import and domestic cars, trucks and SUVs, the Styling Ring is inexpensive and easy to install.

Installation The Carbon Fiber ring perfectly fits the contours of the wheel, tucking into the areas between the wheel and bag.
Installing the Grant Styling Ring takes only a few minutes and requires no tools. A razor blade is used to trim the rubber finish molding around the ring. Double-sided 3M tape on the backside of the Styling Ring secures it to the steering wheel. Alternately, you can forego the tape so that the pressure-fit ring can be easily changed for another design or color later. The Carbon Fiber ring shown here perfectly fits the contours of the wheel, tucking into the areas between the wheel and bag. It's an inexpensive, quick and easy way to dress up your interior and radically change the look of the wheel.

Shift Knob
Grant Products also offers shift knobs that match the Styling Rings. The installation is simple, and no tools are required. The Grant knob kit even includes a hex wrench and several lengths of set-screws to make the installation a breeze. When combined with a Styling Ring, a Grant shift knob is an easy and impressive way to restyle an interior.

Like most of today's factory steering wheels, this new Beetle's 3-spoke wheel is not that impressive.

The Custom Styling Ring from Grant Products is a simple, inexpensive and easy-to-install restyling solution. Within minutes, the lackluster factory wheel can become a custom-looking piece.

The Styling Ring is attached with 3M double-sided tape. It pressure-fits to the wheel rim, form-fitting each spoke and tightly gripping the rim. Simply peel the protective covering from the strips and install the Styling Ring.

The Styling Ring is positioned over the wheel and simply pushed into position. No tools are required for installation, which takes only seconds. Pre-made holes allow access to the horn buttons. It's a no-brainer.

Firm pressure around the Styling Ring seats it to the wheel and the 3M adhesive fixes it tightly.

A self-adhesive finishing molding is now applied around the circumference of the Styling Ring. We start at the bottom of the wheel and continue around, trimming the edge of the molding at the starting point.

Removing and reinstalling the shift knob only takes a few minutes and can make a major difference when combined with a matching Styling Ring. The Grant knob comes complete with a hex wrench and mounting hardware.

On this Honda SI, knob removal begins by unscrewing the bottom collar to access the set-screws, which are then undone using the wrench included in the kit.

With the retainers removed, the old knob can be lifted free of the shift rod. The old collar is also lifted off.

With the knob removed, give the area a good cleaning, including the threads on the shifter. The entire removal process here took less than two minutes.

Several spacers are supplied with the Grant shift knob to cover different shift-rods. Simply use the one that slides snugly over the rod.

For this application, we installed the longer of the set-screws (three in the shift knob), leaving room for the knob to slide over the spacer. You might have to adjust the screws to clear the spacer during installation.

Securely hold the knob in position and tighten the three set-screws. The screws burrow through the spacer material and secure the knob to the metal shaft. Don't over-tighten the screws and strip the threads; just snug them up.

Lift and screw on the new trim collar, which covers the set-screws and completes the installation.
