Smart Car
Smart car could be "Americanized" soon

Safety
Steering and handling like a typical small car, the Smart coupe rides with reasonable comfort. Despite its Lilliputian dimensions, the coupe does not elicit a sensation of vulnerability. Smart is "supposed to be one of the safer cars on the road," Schneider said. "The size of it really is not an issue. The car is really like a passenger life-support system; it's a roll cage." On an expressway, the Smart feels as secure and stable as most subcompacts.
Although the speedometer is easy enough to see, twin gauges perched atop the dashboard are less visible, due to their unconventional placement. Two occupants get pleasing comfort and roominess, at least for shorter journeys. A raised seat promises easy all-around visibility, despite strangely shaped mirrors. Cargo space behind the seats is helpful if modest in volume. Lift a lid in the cargo area, and you can see the tiny engine.
Like the Volkswagen New Beetle when it debuted in 1998, and the MINI Cooper today, the Smart car isn't suited for owners who don't like to be noticed. "It's like a wave," Schneider said. "You can't drive this car around without getting attention."
A "fortwo" model has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, claimed to be the only production vehicle to be displayed as an art object while it was available in the marketplace. The original design was developed as a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and the maker of Swatch watches.
Prices are expected to start around $15,000, though a fully loaded Smart convertible might run as high as $25,000, according to communications director Alex Campbell. Each car has antilock braking and an Electronic Stability Program. Power windows and locks will be standard. Air conditioning and power steering are optional.
