Restoration

It all started on January 11, 1923 in Leesburg, Texas. That was the day one of the world's greatest racers and automotive entrepreneurs was born, Carroll Hall Shelby.

Beginning his racing career in 1952, Shelby enjoyed success as a racer, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June of 1959. However, he was forced to retire from racing in 1960 after suffering from heart problems. The following year, Shelby decided to build his own street-going racecar. In the process of giving birth to the legend we know today as the Shelby Cobra, Shelby established himself as a living automotive legend.

Cobra models were powered first by 260 cubic inch small block Ford engines, and later by 289 cubic inch Ford V-8s. But, the truly desirable models got their motivation from 427 cubic inch big block Ford engines. Sadly, the last 427 Cobra was sold in August 1968. Originally, you could buy a Cobra for just over $6,000, these rare collectibles are now worth upwards of $1,000,000 for a perfect 427 SC model or 289 FIA version.

To celebrate Carroll Shelby's 80th birthday, the Petersen Automotive Museum hosted a gala birthday celebration that was co-sponsored by the Museum's Checkered Flag 200, Cobra Owners Club of America and Shelby American Enterprises. The upper parking deck was turned into the largest (and most expensive) Cobra show ever assembled. There were over 1,500 Cobra fanatics on hand to ogle the 118 original Cobras on display. The event was highlighted with a rousing round of happy birthday sung to Shelby by friends, former Shelby American employees and special guests including Linda Vaughn.

Multi-Million Dollar Parking Lot: The upper parking deck at the Petersen Automotive Museum was jam-packed with 118 original Shelby Cobras.

Golden Signature: Carroll Shelby, assisted by his wife Cleo, sits for an autograph session signing items including Cobra glove box doors, valve covers and posters. Friends, fans and former Shelby employees stood in line for hours for an opportunity to have the legend himself sign a keepsake item.

Silver Bullet: There were a few examples of Shelby's latest car, the Series One, including this super-clean silver example.

Vendor Alley: Plenty of vendors were on hand displaying Cobra wares and Ford performance parts including the guys from Galpin Ford who brought this hot-looking Mustang and Ford Lightning pickup.

Old Yeller II: There were many vehicles on display besides Shelby Cobras including the legendary 1959 Old Yeller II that was built by Max and Ina Balchowsky and was driven by Carroll Shelby. Power for this yellow beast comes from a 401 "Nailhead" Buick engine.

GT 350H: Shelby was involved at many levels with Ford and its performance vehicles during the 1960s. One of his more popular projects was a series of GT 350H Mustangs purchased by Hertz for use in its rental car fleets. For only $17 dollars a day and $.17 a mile, anyone could rent one of these road rockets.

Original Cobra Owner: Hank Williams was on hand displaying his Cobra, CSX 2227, the winningest 289 Cobra ever produced. Williams entertained the crowd with stories of his exploits winning races and trophies around the country-all as the original owner of this beauty.

427 Racer: This 427 Cobra is one of the rarest of all Shelby Cobras. It's CSX 3016 and is owned by Anthony Boosalis. It was built in 1965 and is one of only 22 full competition Cobras. During 1966, this car was raced throughout the Northeast at tracks such as Bridgehampton, New York and Limerock, Connecticut.

Sharp Red Racer: There was no shortage of Cobras to ogle, including this sharp-looking red competition roadster.

Loads of Cobras: No matter where you looked, there was row after row of Shelby Cobras including two Daytona Coupes in the back row.
