wheel bearing repair repack grease
When servicing existing bearings, begin by cleaning them with solvent. Then, inspect the bearings for signs of scoring on the rollers, discoloration and any other evidence of mayhem. Replace with new bearings if necessary.
bearing-packer tool photo
Inexpensive bearing-packer tools are available at many auto parts stores. The bearing is sandwiched between two discs, and the tool forces grease from a standard gun through the bearing's cavities.
hand packing bearing grease
The old fashioned way: First, put a big dollop of grease in one hand, then scoop it into the large side of the bearing with the other hand.
repack wheel bearings by hand
Rotate the bearing and keep scooping till fresh grease oozes liberally through all openings. When in doubt, keep scooping?more is better in this case.
replace wheel bearing and regrease
With the bearing back in place, surround it with more grease. This serves two purposes: further minimizing friction and protecting the bearing from any dirt that might infiltrate the axle.
