Description:
Saab badge-engineered its way into the key midsize SUV market by adapting the Buick Rainier with mild exterior and dash updates. The result is a predictable package, with all the strengths and weaknesses shared with the Buick and GMC Envoy. (Admittedly, its interior is much better than the Chevrolet Trailblazer cockpit.) The powertrains are shared virtues, with the 9-7X starting with a base 4.2-liter inline six-cylinder engine that produces 285 horsepower. This Atlas-family engine is robust and relatively efficient in all applications. For serious tow duties, there is an available 5.3-liter V-8 with 300-hp and 330 lb-ft of torque. A strong, smooth engine in other GM vehicles, the 5.3 is made more desirable for Saab with Displacement on Demand cylinder deactivation, elevating mileage in steady-state, low-load cruising. Power from either aluminum engine is routed through a standard AWD and kept in check with StabiliTrak stability control system. The 9-7x 4.2i includes such niceties as dual-zone automatic climate control system, basic power amenities, heated/power front seats, moon roof, leather seats, wood trim, 275-watt Bose stereo, and Saab-signature center-console ignition location. The 9-7X 5.3i adds Xenon headlights, headlight washers, power-adjustable pedals, and the torquey V-8 power. For true power mongers, The Aero, a new model for ’08, comes with its own 395 horsepower 6.0-liter V-8 engine. A DVD entertainment system and navigation system are available on all models.
