The well-dressed Mercury companion to the Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute is distinguished by its upscale appearance. The Mariner line-up starts with a 153 horsepower 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine and FWD, though it is much more appealing with the additional 47 horsepower found in the 200 horsepower 3.0-liter V-6. All Mariners come with a four-speed automatic transmission, a continually variable transmission and 4WD is optional across the range. The ultimate Mariner model however is the new Mariner Hybrid, providing compact SUV goodness with compact sedan fuel economy. The Mariner hybrid powertrain consists of a 133 horsepower 2.3-liter DOHC Duratec four-cylinder engine, two AC electric motors, continuously variable transmission (CVT), and 250 D-sizes nickel-metal-hydride batteries in a compact, rear-mounted, sealed package. Like the Escape hybrid, this special vehicle is most effective in urban driving, where its power management tricks lead to the greatest fuel savings.
