Description:
Based off the Jeep Grand Cherokee platform, the longer Commander accommodates a third seating row. Styling draws clear inspiration from the retired Cherokee, and it is executed with more than enough faux bolts as to appeal to the image-conscious Hummer set. Three engines are available: 3.7-liter V-6, 4.7-liter V-8, and 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 with cylinder deactivation. This is a big vehicle for the Liberty-shared V-6, though the V-8s are thirsty. All engines use a five-speed automatic transmission. Like the Grand Cherokee, the Commander’s off-road credentials are impressive, with three available 4WD systems. The independent front suspension and multi-link rear are quite effective scrambling through tough trails and do an admirable job on-road. The well-dressed interior gives modern Jeep design cues a decided “hunting lodge” feel, with wood appliqués and more exposed fasteners. CommandView skylights help adventurers commune with nature. The third row is more intimate than some competitors and the collective head rest assemblage does impact rearward visibility. Available safety equipment includes stability control, roll mitigation, tire-pressure monitor, and an array of side air bags.
