Engineering adjustments to previous models make the current generation the quietest Ford Explorer ever – 10-percent quieter than the previous generation in fact, and 20-percent quieter than the Toyota 4Runner. Adjustments to the roof panel, an improved moonroof wind deflector, reshaped, larger mirrors, and improved noise-absorbing interior materials were all factors that helped to reduce wind noise. Standard powertrain is a 4.0-liter 210 horsepower V-6 with five-speed automatic transmission, and an optional 4.6-liter 292 horsepower V-8 is available with a six-speed auto. Both powertrains have the option of rear- or four-wheel drive. Those seeking something a bit more ruged might find the Explorer SportTrac SUT of interest. By offering the comfort of silence, the Explorer is a clear step up from many competitors.
