Description:
Pontiac developed the current Grand Prix with an eye on European sport sedans, ensuring it lived up to the “excitement division” promise. The base engine is the well-regarded (albeit long-lived) 3.8-liter V-6 with 200 horsepower. The fun spools up with the supercharged variant producing 260 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. A recent addition to the line is a 5.3-liter V-8 with 303-hp and 323 lb-ft of torque steer. The eight-cylinder engine adds tremendous grunt, but it also packs the front end with additional weight that effects the handling balance. The standard four-speed automatic transmission conspires with the traction control system to enable hard launches with grin-inducing tire spin. Clearly, this is a car calibrated for fun. Likewise, the Stabilitrak stability control system enables enough sliding motion to entertain, yet it helps correct rapid rotation or simple over indulgence. The Grand Prix has a traditional roster of standard amenities, such as air conditioning, power windows/locks, keyless entry, rear defogger, and cruise control. Inside, the GT adds chrome accents, leather trim bits, and trip computer, while on the exterior it has dual exhaust, fog lamps, and 17-inch wheels. The GXP piles on a heads-up display, rear spoiler, Tapshift paddle shifters, and 18-inch wheels.
