Description:
First introduced for 2005, the Mercury Montego is a large family sedan based on a Volvo-derived platform. Within its 200.7-inch length is a spacious interior, on par with the Toyota Avalon, providing quite comfortable seating for five. The seats are slightly higher from than ground than is common, easing ingress/egress and giving the driver a slightly elevated view of the road. The interior is made more appealing for ’07 with available power-adjustable pedals, DVD entertainment system, and navigation system. The Montego has a large 21.2-cubic-foot trunk, and the cargo capability is made greater by a split, folding second-row seat. Further, the front passenger seat also can fold flat to accommodate long items. The powertrain remains a critical weakness. The 3.0-liter V-6 Duratec engine used in previous Ford Motor Company products trails competitors by 40 to 70 horsepower, and it is challenged in moving the Montego at a brisk pace. Front-wheel-drive models have a six-speed automatic transmission, and AWD sedans have a continuously variable transmission. As testament to its Volvo lineage, the Montego has earned top five-star ratings for front- and side-impact performance in government testing, as well as a "Best Pick" rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for frontal crash performance. However, the Montego scores a Poor from the IIHS in side crash without the optional side and side-curtain air bags. Add the air bags, and it scores Good.
