Description:
The Grand Marquis, and Ford Crown Victoria mechanical twin, are spiritual descendents of the classic, rear-drive full-size sedans from the 1960s. Like their predecessors, these big V-8-powered cars are in their element on long highway cruises and provide generous space for five, even six, passengers. Both sedan lines were significantly updated for 2003, with a new frame, suspension, and steering. For 2007, the Grand Marquis evolution continues with a still fresh front fascia, grille, and trunk appliqué. LS models include 16-inch wheels and an overhead console including compass, map light and universal garage-door opener for ‘07. Both Grand Marquis models – GS and LS – have a standard 4.6-liter SOHC V-8. In base configuration, the engine produces 224 horsepower—modest output compared against even a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry V-6, but the 272 pound-feet of torque helps the heavy car to move. An optional handling package boosts the horsepower to 239, and it replaces the fuel-efficient 2.73:1 axle ratio for the more aggressive 3.27:1 for improved acceleration. Both engine configurations team with a four-speed automatic transmission. Torque management is aided by an all-speed traction control system on all but the base trim. The Grand Marquis has performed well in all crash tests, and even exemplary when equipped with the optional side air bags. More upscale than the Crown Vic, the Mercury Grand Marquis provides traditional power amenities, but its greatest luxury feature is space.
