Description:
Mazda attacks the mainstream midsize sedan market with three body styles, and more than a dash of zoom. The Mazda6, therefore, competes against the segment stalwarts Honda Accord and Toyota Camry with a sedan, a five-door sedan hatchback, and a wagon. At the low end, Mazda offers a 2.3-liter 153 horsepower inline-four as well as a 2.3-liter 160-hp inline-four cylinder that is shared with the Mazda3, providing affordable, efficient entry into the line. The step-up engine, and standard wagon powertrain, is a 3.0L, 215-hp V6. Three transmissions are offered: five-speed manual and automatic, and a six-speed automatic. All models feature standard power amenities, air conditioning, steering-wheel controls, and six-speaker stereo. Upgrades add delights like a Bose audio system and safety essentials like side air bags. The 6 is taken to the extreme with a MAZDASPEED model that combines a 274-hp turbocharged engine and AWD. Not for the faint of heart, the MAZDASPEED6 has a sport-tuned suspension, six-speed manual transmission, 18-inch wheel/tire fitment, upgrade brakes, and a serious penchant for excitement. Smaller in proportion than its prime competitors, the Mazda6 compensates with its more engaging personality, making it a tempting alternative to the high-volume imports.
