2007 Nissan Maxima
| | Sharing platform and powertrain with the Altima, the Nissan Maxima competes as a more sporting alternative to the Toyota Avalon. Offered in two trim levels, the sole Maxima configuration is front-drive with a 255 horsepower 3.5-liter V-6 engine and continuously variable transmission. Even with a standard traction control system, the Maxima, like the Altima, suffers from torque steer under hard acceleration. Unlike previous generations, the current Maxima has a fully independent suspension, with struts up front and a multi-link setup in the rear. The Maxima is tuned for sporting handling, especially in contrast to the Avalon, though the trade off is some ride harshness. Large disc brakes are fitted at each corner. Both the SE and SL are well equipped, with few details separating them. They each have a full compliment of electric amenities that can be expanded through numerous available options packages. The sportier of the two, the SE has larger 18-inch wheels, rear spoiler, and aluminum interior trim bits. The SL is distinguished by HID headlamps, leather upholstery, wood trim and a premium Bose system with enough “acronymed,” high-tech features to fill a Scrabble board. Interior touch-ups and new exterior fascias round out the 2007 highlights. |
