With a diverse line up, the Subaru Impreza range appeals to conservative northerners with its reliability and AWD, as well as high-performance enthusiasts with its potent WRX models. The full line was restyled for 2006 to showcase the new Subaru face, with a three-section grille, dramatic headlamps, and fresh tail lamps. Beneath the sheetmetal skin, the naturally aspirated models gain eight horsepower for 173 total, claiming more real-world grunt in the process. The added verve is quite noticeable, adding to the driving enjoyment instilled with the aggressive grip and responsive steering. Known for their safety, the base Impreza and Impreza Outbacks now feature front side-impact and head air bags and four-channel ABS. The Outback Sport is an interesting addition to the line, with a heavy-duty raised suspension, fog lamps, roof rack, and two-tone paint, it looks like it popped out of the L.L. Bean catalog ready for woodsy adventures. The real thrill machines are the WRXs, offered in sedan and wagon form. The big news for ’06 is that the zippy 2.0-liter, 217-hp turbo has been replaced with a larger-displacement 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 230 horsepower and greater low-end torque. In addition to power increases, the WRX benefits from a fortified chassis with aluminum front suspension links, a quicker steering ratio, 17-inch alloy wheels replacing 16-inchers, wider, lower-profile tires and larger, more powerful brakes. The WRX choices have increased to include a new, lower-priced WRX TR Sedan, along with the premium-level WRX Limited sedan and wagon. The ultimate WRX remains the formidable WRX STI, with 300-blazing-horsepower, Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD), performance-tuned AWD, and aggressive wheel/tire fitment. Despite its extreme capabilities, the WRX STI remains a thoroughly livable sport sedan for every day use.
