Based on the previous-generation Subaru Legacy wagon, the Baja is a unique combination of sedan and pickup. It is a four-seat spiritual heir to the fondly remembered Brat, with the modern twist of a bed pass-through when the rear seats are folded. Like its two-door progenitor, the novel bed is quite limited for space and functionality. An available bed extender can enable 93 inches of storage. The Baja comes with a 2.5-liter, 165-hp boxer four-cylinder engine. A more entertaining turbocharged variant delivers 210-hp. Both engines are offered with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. Like all Subarus, the Baja features AWD, with three different flavors available. The Baja comes with air conditioning, power windows/locks/mirrors, cruise control, keyless entry, and moonroof. The Baja Turbo adds a 100-watt AM/FM/CD changer stereo, Momo steering wheel, body-color door handles, and functional hood scoop. The true comforts come from the Turbo Leather Package with six-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, and leather upholstery, plus hard bed cover and six-spoke alloy wheels. A security system is the only new item for 2006.
