The Ion line has been treated to continuous refinements since launch, yet both the sedan and coupe continue to trail the best-in-class models from Honda, Mazda, and Toyota. Among the detail enhancements for 2006, a midline Ecotec engine was introduced for the Saturn 3. The 2.4-liter inline-four engine produces a stout 170 horsepower with 162 lb-ft of torque. This strong powerplant is flanked by a base 2.2-liter, 140-hp I-4 and the supercharged 2.0-liter, 205-hp I-4 from the Red Line cars. Performance further benefits from a fortified five-speed manual transmission, and aggressive 4.05:1 axle ratio on the Red Line. The resultant acceleration from this raucous combination sees 0-60 mph runs blaze by in a claimed 6.2 seconds. The package also includes trim-specific front and rear fascias, fog lamps, freer-flowing exhaust, sport-tuned suspension, Recaro seats, and 17-inch wheels. The Red Line can be pushed further with the Competition package adding a limited-slip differential, gunmetal-finish 17-inch wheels, boost gauge, and programmable ladder tachometer. The bare-bones Ion 1 has been retired for ‘06, leaving the better-equipped Ion 2 to serve as the entry point. Beyond new colors, the 2 and 3 benefit most from an updated center console and a new stereo family with MP3 inputs.
