In 1964, the midsized Pontiac Tempest was stuffed with a large car engine, and thus the musclecar era was born. Four decades later, the GTO stands as the only true musclecar from General Motors, risen from the memories of the retired F-body duo, Cheverolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird. An Australian import, the GTO is essentially a Holden Monaro that has been prepped to deal with the diverse, harsh climates in America and treated to a Pontiac facelift. This strategy enabled a swift Firebird replacement with a well-sorted, powerful, and refined car. Unlike the F-body coupes, the more sophisticated GTO has a fully independent suspension that enables better road manners and respectable handling ability. However, the real story is underhood where the GTO touts an LS2 V-8. Just as in the Corvette, this exemplary pushrod engine produces 400 horsepower, available with a six-speed Tremec T56 manual or four-speed 4L65-E automatic transmission. With either combination, the GTO can race 0-60 mph in under five seconds. The four-place interior is well executed, with comfortable, form-fitting bucket seats, two-tone trim, premium materials, and impressive fit and finish. The GTO includes a healthy standards roster, with a 10-speaker Blaupunkt audio system, air conditioning, power windows/locks/mirrors, power front seats, rear defogger, and information center. The interior trim, stitching, and leather upholstery are offered in dynamic, contrasting colors that give the cockpit a sporty appearance. This is the last model year for the GTO, though the Camaro will return for 2009.
