Mercedes has carved a niche between traditional luxury sedans with the CLS, creating a beautifully styled four-door with a coupe presence. All-new for 2006, the unique car is offered in CLS500 and high-performance CLS55 AMG variations. The “base” model is fitted with a 5.0L, 302-hp V-8 with a seven-speed automatic transmission. Borrowing liberally from the E-Class and S-Class, the CLS overflows with standard features in the leather-and-wood-trimmed interior. Niceties such as four-zone climate control and harman/kardon Logic7 digital surround-sound stereo are just the beginning, with high-tech options like radar-based Distronic speed control ensuring the driver envies no one. The AMG model invigorates the coupe-like sedan with a supercharged 5.5-liter V-8 that churns out 469 horsepower and 516 lbs-ft of torque. Rather than share the CLS500’s transmission, the CLS55 uses AMG's SpeedShift five-speed automatic. Wonderful to drive, the CLS does compromise rear ingress/egress, as well as headroom, due to its sloped roof. For 2007, the base CLS sees power climb significantly to 382-hp and the AMG version surges to 507-hp.
