Looking into 2005
Trends are elusive but incentives are inevitable

Now that the annual auto-show season has ended, it's time to consider what the 2005 model year will bring. New products span such a wide range of sizes, classes, and body styles that trends are elusive.
New Models
More than 30 distinct new models are arriving for 2005. Some are already on sale. Close to 20 others have been redesigned or modified substantially. Only five of the new models are SUVs, joined by a couple of "crossover" vehicles. Five new sports cars will be at dealerships, but only one—the Lotus Elise—ranks as affordable. Both the Chevrolet Corvette and the Ford Mustang have been redesigned, too. Notable new sedans include the Maserati Quattroporte and Cadillac STS (replacing the Seville).
New Choices
Soft-top fans have two alluring new choices: the spirited little MINI convertible and the stylish two-passenger Chrysler Crossfire roadster. GM is issuing a quartet of new vans, while Chrysler and Dodge have added fold-down second- and third-row seats to their extended-length minivans. Saab is launching its Subaru-based 9-2X sport wagon.
Kia and Suzuki have new compact hatchbacks. Otherwise, hardly anyone seems interested in the entry-level market. Even the new compact Chevrolet Cobalt is considered a "premium" model, unlike the Cavalier that it replaces.
RWD Revival
Rear-wheel drive is experiencing a revival, with the recent debut of the Chrysler 300 sedan and Dodge Magnum wagon. DaimlerChrysler has hedged its bets, though, promising all-wheel-drive versions this fall. Despite stability enhancement, shoppers deep in the Snow Belt might be a little reluctant to risk rear-drive.

How big was the overhaul? Could be poorly installed rings. Did the guy hone the bore?
