The Process
Getting down to the nitty gritty, Virginia Snook of Auto Upholstery in San Bernardino, California personally handled the installation. She started with fresh underlayment from Year One, a resto-parts supplier, and then applied new padding on top of that. The final layer was the finished carpeting. When asked about doing interiors on older versus newer cars, she admits, "it always takes more time on a restoration. Things don't always fit. Also, older cars may need more insulation for heat and noise, especially if they have a big engine." In general, when you're hiring an upholstery company, she adds that, "It's important to be specific about what you want, whether it's original carpeting or a newer color." In other words, decide beforehand whether your project is a restoration or a restification.

The rubberized underlayment for the padding and carpeting has cut-lines already embossed in the material to simplify fitting.

The underlayment cuts easily with a sharp pair of shears.

Sprayed-on carpet adhesive holds the underlayment in place.

Next the carpet padding goes in, and it too is cut to fit with scissors.

Since this carpeting is premium-grade stuff, care must be taken in fitting it precisely. Note how nicely it goes with the body paint color.

Chalk lines mark the darts or corners to cut.

The headliner and side panels also needed to be replaced.

If you look closely, you'll notice a star pattern instead of a pin-dot pattern. The former style was found on '64 Pontiacs, which Weiner preferred over the '65 pin-dot style.

Notice how thick and nicely fitted this carpet is. If it's good enough for a Porsche, it's good enough for "The Great One!"
