On sale now, the all-new, seventh-generation 2009 Nissan Maxima looks to distance itself from platform-mate Altima by deliver more luxury and sporting character wrapped up in a more exciting design. Nissan describes this bold sedan as returning to its heritage as "The 4-Door Sports Car," reminding of the then-thrilling early cars.The redesigned model starts at $29,290 for the Maxima 3.5 S and $31,990 for the Maxima 3.5 SV. Each trim is fitted with a 3.5-liter, 290-horsepower DOHC V-6 engine, paired with a continuously variable transmission with a manual "shift" mode. This powertrain delivers 35 more horsepower than the previous generation Maxima, for 290 horsepower and 261 lb-ft of torque.Fuel economy has increased one mpg both city and highway over last year, rated at 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway. (Does make one wonder if another mpg or two would have been available without the power increase...)Breaking from the bigger is better trend, the '09 Maxima rides on a shorter wheelbase and shaves inches off the overall length. However, it is wider, creating a more aggressive visual presence and the promise of livelier handling, aided by a sportier suspension setup.The 2009 Maxima is available with several new option packages, including the Sport Package (3.5 SV), with sport-tuned suspension, 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, premium leather-appointed seats, paddle shifters and more. Plus, the Premium Package (3.5 SV) boasts dual-panel moonroof, seven-inch LCD screen with RearView Monitor, Eucalyptus wood-tone trim and more.
