In the spirit of democracy, Toyota sought to end a decade-long debate and drum up a little marketing buzz by launching a poll to let the masses decide the right way to pluralize “Prius.” The answer is: Prii. Just like Octupus, Octupi. Now it is Prius, Prii.
That choice was made from Prius, Priuses, Prium. and Prien. It was a close contest, with the six-week poll ending with “Prii” claiming 25 percent of the 1.8 million votes and the simpler “Prius” taking 24 percent.
“Community has always been a big part of the Prius brand, so it was only fitting that we invite the online communities to participate in the plural discussion,” said Colin Morisako, advertising manager for Toyota. “The people have spoken—Prii will be the accepted term used to describe multiple Prius vehicles going forward.”
The poll results are timely, as the Prius family will soon include the Prius V with more cargo space and the compact Prius C. (See our Prius V preview and video.)
