First Look: Lexus LF-CC Concept with New 2.5L Hybrid (VIDEO)

by Ryan ZumMallenon 09.18.2012 08:55

The spindle grille is here to stay, without question now that the Lexus LF-CC midsized-coupe concept has debuted at the 2012 Paris Auto Show.

The concept car is an exercise in furthering future Lexus design, but also hints at components that will reach production in the very near future. For starters, Lexus will build a D-Segment premium midsized coupe in the vein of the LF-CC – for reference, likely a direct competitor to the Audi A5. The LF-CC also debuts an all-new 2.5L hybrid powertrain that Lexus says will return industry-leading fuel efficiency. Be on the lookout.

But back to the design. The Lexus LF-CC accentuates some current Lexus aesthetics and also introduces new ones that could make it to production. The spindle grille is front and center, even more enlarged and prominent – indicating that it isn’t going anywhere soon. People definitely either love it or hate it, and when we drove the 2013 LS a few weeks ago (article here), we witnessed the full spectrum of reactions from passersby.

The LF-CC also sports enlarged front brake ducts, a protruding lip and straking side intake reminiscent of the vaunted LFA. Exposed head- and taillights probably won’t see the light of production, but the overall look fits the current Lexus profile and will surely see increased LED implementation when the upcoming coupe hits the market.

The new engine and hybrid system arrive at a critical time for Lexus and Toyota, the gas-electric pioneer who could use a spark (pun intended) as competitors like Hyundai and Ford have come to market with competitive or even better imitations. Horsepower and mpg figures are not yet available, but the 2.5L four-cylinder is direct injected with an Atkinson cycle and should aim for an impressive blend of power and efficiency. No word yet on which models will be equipped with the powertrain.

It's becoming harder & harder not to consider buying a hybrid!
Lexus really nails this one.

True Lexus has a solid reputation ....but I like seeing the Detroit mfg's remake themselves and create some great vehicles.  The CTS-V coupe is awesome
