Update: 2014 Jaguar F-Type Expanded Review

Get ready for heads to roll, because images of the production 2013 Jaguar F-Type convertible have leaked onto the Internet ahead of its official debut at the Paris Motor Show in two weeks.

The image was posted to an automotive photographer’s Facebook page, and then removed, but not before picked it up. It shows the new F-Type in all of its glory, a spiritual successor to the Jaguar CX-16 Concept and iconic E-Type. We’ve had plenty of posts about the upcoming sports car in camouflaged form, but this is the first opportunity to see it in the flesh – and we like what we’re seeing.

For a refresher, here’s the kind of performance you can expect from the F-Type once it’s unleashed onto public roads:

The 2013 F-Type is a vital car for Jaguar, an entry level sports car to compete head-on with the Mercedes SLK and Porsche Boxster while also introducing a younger generation of buyers to the Jaguar brand. Powered by a supercharged V6 engine making between 340 and 380 horsepower, the F-Type will bring thrilling driving dynamics to both road and track – a luxury Mazda Miata, if done correctly. An 8-speed ZF automatic transmission puts power to the rear wheels.

The design shows the progression of the Jaguar front fascia, taken from the CX-16, featuring an enlarged front grille and dual brake ducts accented by a blacked-out splitter lip. The side profile is – as a Jaguar should be – sensual with bulging hips. Some may argue that the F-Type lacks the elegance and distinguished aesthetics of the original E-Type, but doesn’t everything?

It’s impossible to recapture that lightning in a bottle, and besides, current crash test ratings and safety codes will prevent such a design from probably ever reaching another production car. The F-Type may be a bit aggressive for its target crowd, but that’s why Jaguar makes the XK. As for us? We’ll take blue, please.
