Volvo has decided to take its cars in a new direction, beginning with designing a new engine. The Swedish automaker is in the process of starting production of variants of the four-cylinder engine family at the Volvo Car Group plant in Skovde. What do you think is the record for the longest drift? A few hundred feet? A few miles? A week ago, if you had guessed a few miles, you would have been correct. The BMW M5 (of course) shattered this record by quite a large distance last week.

At the BMW Performance Center in Greenville, South Carolina, the BMW M5 broke the Guinness World Record for the furthest distance travelled with a sustained drift. To mark its 10th year in existence, Scion is releasing a congeries of new models and modified old models. The 10 Series, as they call it, features editions of the tC, iQ, xD, xB, and FR-S in celebration of the automaker’s 10th birthday. Each car will be painted in Silver Ignition, matching the seat belts and other interior components.

The 10 Series 2-14 tC will have an array of new features. With premium stitching on the seats and steering wheel, projector-beam headlights, LED accent lighting, 18-inch gray alloy wheels, and a lit up panel above the radio, the car will have a sportier look. The shift knob will be illuminated and all the mats in the car will sport the Scion badge. After setting the record for electric vehicles at last year’s Pikes Peak Hill Climb with the TMG EVP002, Toyota is sending a modified version for this year’s race with hopes of one-upping its predecessor.

As with most sports competitions, you can learn just as much from a win as you can from a loss. TMG took this to heart when, after setting the record of 10 minutes and 15.38 seconds, transported the EV P002 back to the workshop to improve it further. It is currently on its way to North Carolina to the Toyota Racing Development plant to undergo aerodynamic modifications to the chassis and track testing before its next race. More...

Ford’s goal was to create 12,000 hourly jobs by 2015. Not even halfway through 2013, they’ve already achieved 75% of their goal.

With the truck segment growing three times as fast as the rest of the industry, Ford F-150 demand going out the roof, and the upcoming Transit full-size van, Ford has moved to start hiring more workers. For these reasons, Ford is adding 2,000 jobs this year at the Kansas City Assembly Plant. About 900 of these jobs and a third crew will be added in the third quarter of the year, and the remaining 1,100 jobs will be added in the fourth quarter, just in time for the all-new Transit. For the 12th time since 1978, a Corvette will be the official Pace Car at the Indianapolis 500. This Pace Car won’t be any Corvette, though; this is the all-new 7th-generation 2014 Corvette Stingray.
