Toyota Open Concept Debuts In The Flesh At Geneva

We saw it last week in staged media photos, but the Toyota Open Concept gave us a better look this week at the Geneva Motor Show. Surprise, surprise: It looks really good.

The possible forebear to a production Scion FR-S Convertible, the Toyota Open Concept is a design study in what a roof-less FR-S might look like. The new roadster maintains proportions from the coupe version, sporting a design that looks ready to attack the windiest of roads at any time. That said, there are some drawbacks t the Open Concept that may not make it to production.

For one, keeping the proportions the same means that Toyota simply lopped off the top and stored it behind the rear seats. That leaves extremely limited room for rear passengers, so this design is basically not happening in production.

Subaru, who produces a version of the car called the BRZ, did not present a convertible version and have stated that they would lengthen the car to accommodate rear passengers if they were to make a convertible.

Further, eliminating the roof makes the rear deck and trunk appear very long as it curves over into the hips and rear of the car. A once-muscled rear all of a sudden looks bulbous and even droopy.

Again, the Toyota Open Concept is not yet headed for production, so there is plenty of time for the kinks to be worked out. For the most part, response seems to have been extremely positive. The Scion FR-S has been a major hit for Toyota, and they’re certainly eager to keep the hot streak going. In that case, it never hurts to go topless and we can’t wait to see the finished version.
