The mid-sized luxury sedan segment is about to get a new player, as our spy photographers recently spotted the 2015 Acura TLX undergoing hot weather testing out in the desert.
Covered in camouflage, the 2015 TLX doesn’t give away many hints about its future design. The model does sport curvy rear hips, and possibly a more athletic character line and sloping rear window, however. It also appears the TLX will strongly resemble the large luxury sedan RLX that debuted earlier this year, with jewel LED headlights and a re-worked beak grille. What else do we know about the TLX?
We know that attitudes have soured somewhat on the current generation TL, and this new TLX is a chance for Acura to wipe the slate clean and start again with a new model to replace it.
In May, sales of the TL were down by 17.8% compared to May 2012. For the year thus far, sales of the TL are down by 15.3%. The TL is widely regarded as a great value in its class, but a polarizing front grille and otherwise non-descript silhouette don’t do it any favors when lined up against the Cadillac ATS and BMW 3-Series.
The 2015 TLX is an opportunity to meet those competitors head-on. Expect a fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine and optional V6, with front-wheel drive and optional AWD. I’ll be anxious to see if it also sports the Precision All-Wheel Steering (P-AWS) that I’m enjoying this week in an RLX test car.
Acura could use a shot of adrenaline in both their design and performance, and while these spy photos are promising, Cadillac and BMW won’t exactly be shaking in their boots unless the TLX can really debut with a bang.
