2014 Porsche 911 GT3: First Look

by Jessica Matsumotoon 03.05.2013 06:01

The beloved Porsche 911 GT3 will return to consumers after a three-year hiatus. Unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show, the new 911 GT3 is the fifth generation in the popular line of performance 911s, and has been completely redesigned.

Most notably, the 2014 Porsche 911 GT3 will feature the first rear-wheel steering in a production Porsche, bringing the white-knuckle excitement of its rally cousins to everyday driving.

The 911 GT3 body is based upon the current 991 model Porsche 911 Carrera, excluding a few distinct features. Some prominent differences between the two 911s include the 1.6 inches added to the 911 GT3’s rear, the unique GT3 front fascia design and the huge GT3 rear spoiler.

Under the hood, the Porsche 911 GT3 has an impressive powertrain – a 3.8L V6 boxer engine that churns out 475 horsepower at 9,000 rpm. Complimenting its rear-wheel drive, the 911 GT3 also has a dual-clutch transmission, which is based on the sequential gearbox used in racing. This allows for “faster shifting” and “increased tactile feedback,” according to Porsche.

But back to the “active rear wheel steering,” which allows the rear wheels to turn in the same or opposite direction as the front wheels, giving the driver better control at faster speeds. A few other features include “electronically controlled, fully variable rear differential lock and dynamic engine mounts.” The 2014 Porsche 911 GT3 also features a set of 20-inch, alloy wheels with center-locking hubs.

All of these elements work together to create a formidable racing machine – the 911 GT3 jets from 0-60 mph in 3.3 seconds and reaches 124 mph in less than twelve seconds.

The 2014 Porsche 911 GT3 will go on sale in the United States in late 2013 and will have a base price of $130,400.
