2014 Ferrari LaFerrari: First Look

by Ryan ZumMallenon 03.05.2013 12:46

Maybe you were expecting the 2014 LaFerrari, the newest ultra-supercar from Ferrari, to be an extreme performance vehicle. After its official debut at the Geneva Motor Show today, it’s safe to say that you would have been wildly underestimating the new Italian superstar.

Even for the company that produced the revolutionary Ferrari Enzo a decade ago, the 2014 LaFerrari is a masterful achievement in engineering and design. Plastered with contemporary hi-tech headlights and massive air ducts, the LaFerrari still managed to maintain a sumptuous profile that gives new meaning to the word “aesthetics.” But the exterior is nothing compared to what’s underneath.

The 2014 LaFerrari will be powered by a HY-KERS hybrid system that pairs a massive 6.3L V12 engine to a 120 kW electric motor for a total output of 950 horsepower and 660 lb.-ft of torque. With a 0-60mph under three seconds and a Fiorano lap at just 1:20 – five seconds faster than the Enzo, three faster than the F12 Berlinetta – the 2014 LaFerrari is far and away the faster production road car that Ferrari has ever produced.

Active aerodynamic diffusers at both the front and rear of the 2014 LaFerrari control airflow without increasing drag – meaning the LaFerrari will automatically know how to increase performance based on your driving inputs.

Check out the video below for a detailed cutaway and engineering walkthrough. Even in Italian, it sounds impressive as hell.

Boy, is it ever a good time to be exuberantly wealthy. The debut of the LaFerrari coincides with the public unveilings of the Lamborghini Veneno and McLaren P1 supercars, each with pricetags running up into the millions and looks to make neckhairs stand at attention. If you’re one of the lucky few that finds themselves facing a tough decision, consider that Ferrari will make only 499 models of the LaFerrari at about $1.2 million a pop. Underestimate it at your own peril.
