It’s official, folks. The rear wheel V8 is coming back. Chevrolet debuted the 2014 Chevrolet SS (abbreviation for Super Sport) at the Daytona International Speedway. The SS is slated to go on sale some time in late summer to early fall of 2013. Chevy’s introduction of the SS follows the other much hyped debut of the 2014 Corvette Stingray at the Detroit Auto Show last month.
The SS is the successor to the Pontiac G8 GXP, and joins a growing line of rear wheel cars like the Chevrolet Camaro and the Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle.
Audiences got a sneak peek at the SS’s sister when Holden, GM’s Austrialian division, unveiled the VR Commodore. The Chevrolet SS is essentially a VR Commodore suited for the American market.
Bearing the same engine as the 2013 Corvette, the SS has a 6.2-liter V8 powerhouse underneath its hood, which is expected to deliver 415 hp and allows the SS to sprint from zero to 60 mph in about 5 seconds. The fuel economy is unknown at present time.
The Chevrolet SS also has a race worthy chassis to match its mean V8. The SS has a 114.8-inch wheelbase, equipped with Brembo brakes and 19-inch forged aluminum wheels. GM remarked that the SS has a nearly 50/50 weight distribution and has a low center of gravity, which improves handling.
Surprisingly, manual transmission will not be offered on the SS. Instead, the engine will feature a six-speed automatic transmission that can be shifted manually using TAP shift paddles mounted on the steering wheel.
Other standard equipment includes a premium Bose nine-speaker sound system, color head-up display, push-button start, electronic stability control, forward collision alert, lane departure warning, side blind zone alert, and rear cross traffic alert. Also notable is the optional Parking Assist, which makes the SS the first Chevrolet to offer this premium feature.
The Chevrolet SS also offers a long list of technology features as standard equipment including:
- Color, touch screen that supports Chevrolet MyLink and the next-generation navigation system
- Bose® Nine-speaker premium sound system
- Color heads-up display
- Push-button start
- StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control
- Forward Collision Alert
- Lane Departure Warning
