More than a week after refusing to comply with an NHTSA request to recall 2.7 million vehicles, Chrysler today relented and announced a campaign to inspect and repair Jeep Grand Cherokee models from 1993-2004 and Jeep Liberty models from 2002-07.

The issue arose following an independent report that fuel tanks in the Grand Cherokee were prone to exploding in rear-end collisions. The NHTSA requested a recall, but Chrysler fought back – an extremely rare position in the auto industry. Beginning in the third quarter of this year, the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee will go on sale with a starting price of $22,995 for the base model. The Jeep Cherokee has the ability to redefine the mid-size SUV segment with its fuel economy, its advanced safety and technology features, its class-leading 4x4 capability, its great on and off road handling, and its nine-speed automatic transmission. The Cherokee will be offered in four trims--Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk.

The first of the trims, the Cherokee Sport, will start with an MSRP of $22,995. It hosts a 2.4-liter MultiAir2 Tigershark I-4 engine that generates 184 horsepower and 171 foot-pounds of torque and it can achieve up to 31 mpg and 500 miles with a full tank. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has requested a recall of the 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2002-2007 Jeep Liberty due to safety concerns, though Chrysler has uncharacteristically refused to implement a recall.

The NHTSA has been monitoring the potential issue since September 2010, and believes the Grand Cherokee and Liberty have a higher risk of fire after rear end collisions. Chrysler has issued a press release defending the safety of their cars. A recall would affect about 2.7 million vehicles.
