There was a time when the Chevrolet Malibu would inspire fantasies of the actual city of Malibu, with its sun-soaked bikinis and surfboards the size of station wagons lining perfect sandy beaches for as far as the eye could see. This Mother’s Day weekend, I found myself bringing a new 2013 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ Turbo to the city that it’s named for. Does the refreshed mid-sized sedan still epitomize Americana? Yes and no.
The two most notable changes in the 2013 Malibu LTZ Turbo are the new design, and the new engine. Its looks have been beefed up with a strong but dynamic shape that emphasizes its newfound athleticism. Under the hood, a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine with 259 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft of torque – the same in the new Cadillac ATS. In both cases, the Malibu attempts to hold onto its big and powerful reputation while adopting a softer, more modern side as well. Sounds like the perfect match. Malibu the city, however, put Malibu the car to the test. More...

Cadillac spokesperson David Caldwell told Edmunds last week that the new model is a complete overhaul, not a re-design, and unsurprisingly emphasized that the focus will be on design and performance. More...

Production is officially underway for the 2013 Cadillac ATS, the most important model in nearly a decade for the American brand as it aims to capture the ever-lucrative entry level luxury segment.
Cadillac has made no secret that they’re aiming to take down the BMW 3-Series and its competitors, and have packed the ATS with components that focus on saving weight and increasing performance. To beat BMW, they’ve taken a page out of the BMW playbook and made a sports sedan that moonlights as a luxury car – Magnetic Ride Control and the in-car CUE system make the ATS an industry leader in technology.
The first ATS rolled out of the Lansing Grand River assembly plant in Michigan on Thursday, and Cadillac added 600 new jobs along with a $190 million renovation to handle the workload. Lansing Grand River also produces all of Cadillac’s popular CTS models.
So the ATS breaks new ground for Cadillac in a lot of literal ways, but more apparent is the way that it has figuratively forged a new direction for the company. More...
