Formula One – Canadian Grand Prix: Formula One is an organization of tradition. These traditions may change or evolve over the years, but mostly the teams play to their roles. On Sunday, some top programs continued their incredible success while one impressive streak came to an end. Sebastian Vettel dominated from the start to capture the win for Red Bull, while on the other end of the spectrum the esteemed McLaren team ended their streak of 64 consecutive races with a point. Sergio Perez and Jenson Button finished 11-12 and were never in contention, marking an unceremonious fall from grace for the famed British squad. The day belonged to Vettel, though, who took his third win of the season and his first ever on the scenic Montreal circuit. He lapped the entire field except for four drivers, and his only hiccups were a quick brush with the Turn 11 wall and a quick off in Turn 1. Other than that, the drama was all behind Vettel. More...

IndyCar Series – Indianapolis 500: They don’t call this the best weekend in motorsports for nothing. Longtime veteran and fan favorite Tony Kanaan blasted to victory in what some immediately labeled the Best… Indy 500… Ever. The 200-lap race saw 68 lead changes, exactly double the previous race record that was set last year. Kanaan made his deciding pass during a restart down the front straight, zooming past leader Ryan Hunter-Reay to take hold of the race that he would not relinquish. Moments earlier, as the cars crawled toward the Start line awaiting the green flag, Kanaan told his KV Racing Technology team: “I’m going to go for it. It’s going to be all or nothing.” The 38-year old Brazilian made his move, and took it all.

Second place went to rookie Carlos Munoz, and Hunter-Reay completed the podium. The top four finishers all drove Chevrolet, while the top finisher for Honda was Justin Wilson in fifth. Marco Andretti came in fourth, and still maintains his lead in the championship standings with an 11-point lead over Takuma Sato. Pole-sitter Ed Carpenter finished tenth. But Sunday was all about Kanaan, who had had his fair share of unfortunate luck at Indy in the past. Kanaan set the all-time Indy 500 speed record, as well, and while the race ended under caution when Dario Franchitti spun out and crashed, the 2013 Indianapolis 500 will surely go down as an unforgettable race that lived up to its deserved title: The Greatest Spectacle in Motorsports. The next few years will see extreme change in Formula One, and the challenge of competing in this new landscape has lured Honda back into the mix. This is fantastic news, and here’s why.

Honda has a wonderful F1 history, but had to pull their team due to the economic downturn in 2008. A stronger financial state and the new engines on the horizon created the perfect circumstances for a return, as Honda will develop the hybrid-recovery 1.6L turbo V6 engine in partnership with the McLaren team. On days like today, the 19th anniversary of the tragic and untimely death of Ayrton Senna, it’s tempting to think about what we lost. Senna was so accomplished and glorious that we prefer to think about what we lost and what might have been. The answer to both is: A lot.

IndyCar – Grand Prix of Long Beach: One of America’s premier racing events took place over the weekend, and I was on hand to cover it for the eighth consecutive year (if you count the first time when I couldn’t get press passes so I snuck in – which I do). Downtown Long Beach is literally in my backyard, so it’s a particular pleasure to have something I’m so passionate about invade my city streets. The race is always a spectacle, and even when the action has been boring the weekend itself is just a giant party and who could complain about that? Sir Stirling Moss, the English racing legend, is stirring up some more controversy. During an interview last Monday with BBC Radio 5, the 83 year-old champion driver claimed that women “lacked the mental aptitude” to compete “wheel-to-wheel” in Formula 1 racing. The Internet exploded with arguments for and against the opinion of the retired racer. Is this a case of crotchety comments of an elderly man, or is there some validity to his opinion? More...
