Audi Issued Autonomous Driving Permit in California

Stanley Yee on

The next time you see an Audi driving beside you on the 405, it might be driving itself. Audi has received a permit to test its autonomous driving technology in California, in yet another step closer to fully self-driving cars.

Back in 2012, California state legislature and Governor Jerry Brown passed a new set of laws for autonomous vehicle testing, and those laws have finally taken effect. Audi was the first company to be approved for the permit, adding to their impressive resume of autonomous vehicle developments. more

August Auto Sales Skyrocket For Chrysler, Subaru, Others

Ryan ZumMallen on

Monthly automotive sales continue to reach new heights, with most brands reporting large August numbers that exceeded expectations and in some cases were their best ever recorded. Some are predicting that the seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) could exceed 17.5 million for the first time since 2006 – nearly one million more than expected by analysts.

Big winners included Subaru and Audi, both of which posted their highest monthly sales ever, as well as the entire Fiat Chrysler Automotive and their stable of brands that beat year-over-year monthly sales for the 53rd consecutive time. Still, the high numbers across the board raise questions about whether the hot streak is sustainable in the long term. more

Seating five passengers, the Q3 has 48.2 cubic feet of cargo space when the rear seats are folded down. It features standard dual-zone automatic temperature control and LED lighting inside, as well as the option for a powered tailgate. On the exterior, it features standard Audi xenon plus and LED daytime running headlights. Diesel Car Sales Rise 25 Percent in 2014

Stanley Yee on

Sales of diesel cars in the United States have increased by 25 percent in the first six months of the year, according to a new report. Clean diesel technology, a relatively new addition to the American market, has shown considerable advancement in the past few years.

Up until a few years ago, most Americans would probably have associated the word diesel with big pickup trucks and 18-wheelers, spewing black smoke as they churned along the highway. In reality, the stereotype diminished years ago, and the negative stigma has only recently started to disappear. Compared to Europe, where almost half of all cars sold are diesel, the U.S. has never quite caught on to the diesel trend, until now. more

2015 Audi A7 3.0 TDI Competition Announced
Stanley Yee on

Audi is celebrating 25 years of TDI by releasing the special edition A7 TDI Competition, a faster and sportier A7 TDI. Not only will the A7 TDI Competition have more power than the standard A7, it will also have chassis improvements typically found on sports coupes.

It has been 25 years since the first Audi TDI, and they are not showing any signs of slowing down. The diesel engine has served its purpose for efficiency and hauling, but the Audi A7 will use it for a different reason entirely: sport. more

New Models Push June Auto Sales Past Expectations
Ryan ZumMallen on

Sales of brand new cars making their introductions to buyers helped June auto sales climb even higher than expected, automakers and analysts said this week. The Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rates (SAAR) showed total sales hit 17 million during the month, up from an expected 16.3 million sales. It is the highest sales rate in the U.S. since 2006.

The biggest headlines belonged to luxury brands like Audi, Maserati and Porsche – each on the strength of new high-volume models. The new A3 improved its sales by 10-percent and helped Audi jump by 23-percent over June 2013.  The new Maserati Ghibli did the same (233-percent), as did the Porsche Macan (11-percent). Others weren’t so lucky, however. more

Audi Introduces Lightweight Glass Fiber Springs
Stanley Yee on

Audi has designed lightweight suspension springs, made from polymer of all things. The new spring technology is slated to launch in Fall 2014.

The main component in the new springs is glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP), as opposed to the traditional steel spring. This drops overall weight by 40 percent, from 6 lbs down to around 3.5 lbs per spring. Total weight savings add up to almost 10 lbs, including a reduction in unsprung weight. more

Motorsports Monday: Audi Continues Endurance Success At Nürburgring 24 Hours
Ryan ZumMallen on

ADAC 24h Rennen Nürburgring: Just seven days after winning at Le Mans, an Audi again crossed the finish line first in a twice around-the-clock enduro race. This time, it was the No. 4 Audi R8 LMS of Phoenix Racing taking the checkered flag at the Nürburgring 24 in convincing fashion.

The Audi won for the second time in three years, and set a new record for distance traveled over the 24 hours at 2,507 miles over 159 laps of the enormous circuit. The absence of rain helped that mark, surely, but so did solid strategy and a knack for avoiding injuries and accidents that collected other contenders one by one. more

Motorsports Monday: Audi Outlasts Toyota and Porsche At Le Mans
Ryan ZumMallen on

World Endurance Championship - 24 Hours of Le Mans: The race that everyone had been waiting for did not disappoint. Fourteen years since Audi began their dominance in the event, three years since Toyota entered the fray and two years since Porsche announced this would be the year they threw their hat in the ring, Le Mans threw them all in a big pot and cooked up a classic.

But while all of those flavors sizzled and cooked in the gumbo, two of the most exciting ones eventually faded away. Porsche and Toyota both had troubles they couldn't overcome, and the indomitable force of Audi again became the main ingredient. The German factory team scored their 13 th overall Le Mans victory, moving to within three of the record (16) set by Porsche. more

Porsche and Audi Look To Add To Their Le Mans Legends
Ryan ZumMallen on

With all the talk of Audi dominance and the long-awaited return of Porsche at the 2014 24 Hours of Le Mans, the final qualifying session saw the two winningest marques in race history on the outside looking in. It was, actually, Toyota that nabbed the top spot with a dominating lap of 3:21.789 on Friday.

Porsche managed a 3:22.146 to take second, but neither they nor Audi look as quick around La Sarthe as the team they’ll be following to the start line on Saturday morning. Of course, Le Mans is about a whole lot more than flat-out speed. In fact, both Porsche and Audi remain in prime position to contend for victory. Here’s why. more
