windshield cleaning

Cleaning automotive glass seems like such a no-brainer that it shouldn't warrant explanation. However, household cleaners aren't always auto-glass friendly.

Special Needs
Car windshields are subject to conditions that house glass rarely sees. Sap, tar and general road grime require deep-penetrating cleaning power. But if the cleaning product leaves streaks, you're simply trading one vision obstruction for another. Inside the vehicle, vinyl upholstery, cigar smoke, exploding soda-pop cans and the like can coat the glass. Window tinting makes de-scumming the windshields even more challenging.

Household cleaners aren't always auto-glass friendly.
All of these concerns have led the car-care industry to formulate cleaners specifically for auto glass. Glass tinted with film is particularly challenging. Many household glass cleaners contain ammonia, which eats through the tint's adhesive. Err on the side of caution by always reading the product's label for proper usage, although most automotive glass cleaners are safe for tinting.

Glass Cleaning
Cleaning glass is basically a spray-and-wipe operation. Many car-care product manufacturers recommend wiping off the product promptly after application. For best results, use a lint- and scratch-free microfiber towel to remove the glass cleaner. Tinting film scratches easily, so using a soft towel is vital when cleaning it.

Obviously, cleaning car windshields and glass isn't rocket science. But by using products specifically designed for the job, the results should be crystal clear. Even for those of us who "don't do windows."
