Handling is where the Belgium-built XC60 excels. Through continuous tight switchbacks on narrow two-lane mountain roads, Volvo's crossover behaved with close to sports-car responses, remaining impressively upright and well controlled. Initially, the ride delivered by a pre-production XC60 felt rather harsh over bumps. On good pavement later on, ride comfort grew much smoother, but the suspension qualifies as tight.
Engine response is smooth and easy: not startling by any means, but benefiting from abundant power. Automatic-transmission operation isn't noticed at all. Quiet running is another virtue, blemished only by occasional rubbery tire sounds while turning on certain pavement surfaces. A barely discernible, yet hearty, snarl appears during hard acceleration. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) fuel-economy estimates have not yet been announced, but Volvo predicts 16 mpg in city driving and 22 mpg on the highway.
Driving Comfort
At first, seats feel a trifle hard, upholstered in slightly slippery leather. Comfort improves after a time, so longer rides are not very taxing at all. Gentle side bolsters are sufficient without fuss, though occupants might slide back and forth a little during twisty turns at speed. Front-seat space is adequate. Rear knee space is acceptable; foot/head room good (though not massive) on the 40/20/40-split seat.
Because so many safety features are active (though some can be switched off), audible or visual warnings may occur periodically. Three beeps, for instance, tells the driver that the XC60 might be getting too close to a lane marker line. Some study of the manual is highly recommended, so you know what each signal means. All-around visibility is not a problem. Controls look complicated, but make sense when studied. Distinctive gauges are easy enough to read. Volvo's navigation screen is crisply clear, but tiny.
Two years ago, this segment included only the Acura RDX and BMW X3. Infiniti's EX wagon joined in 2008. For 2010, Mercedes-Benz has launched its GLK-Class. Audi soon joins the group. When it reaches dealerships in March, the XC60 will sticker for $38,025 (including the $825 destination charge). Leather upholstery is standard. Aluminum inlay is standard on the center stack, but Modem Wood is an option. Accent Leather (two-tone) seating is a no-charge option. Standard equipment includes HD radio, Sirius satellite reception, USB/AUX inputs, and Bluetooth connectivity. (www.volvocars.com)
